Welcome to this week’s edition of the Budgie Bulletin!
On Wednesday evening, the North East Budgerigar Society (NEBS) hosted their inaugural meeting at their brand-new venue in Hectorville. The atmosphere was lively, and members were excited to experience the spacious and welcoming environment. The room was particularly warm, and it didn’t take long for attendees to notice that the thermostat had been set to a toasty 30 degrees Celsius. After some laughs and adjustments, the temperature issue was resolved, allowing everyone to focus on the evening ahead.
Despite a few technical hiccups with the audio-visual equipment, the highlight of the night was an insightful presentation by BCV President Peter Thurn. Known for his expertise and innovation, Peter captivated the audience as he walked through his unique setup and feeding regime for his birds. His approach focused on raising budgerigars “smartly” and cost-effectively, offering valuable tips for both seasoned breeders and newcomers alike.
One particularly intriguing aspect of Peter’s presentation was his current decision to avoid the use of oils in his birds’ diet. He explained that he is experimenting with this change to address a couple of specific concerns he’s flagged, and he’s eager to see how this impacts his birds’ performance and health over time. His approach sparked curiosity and conversation among members, with many keen to see the results of his trial.
Peter also shared his passion for improving the Opaline variety, which has become a key focus of his breeding program. In addition, he revealed that he has joined a growing cohort of breeders working to elevate the Saddleback mutation to exhibition standard, a challenge that many are watching with anticipation.
With Tom Sismey, affectionately known as “the meat tray sniper,” absent from this month’s gathering, the excitement and anticipation surrounding the monthly meat raffle reached new heights. Tom’s absence opened the door for a fresh face to claim the prize. When the winning ticket was finally announced, it was John Mulley who came away victorious, beaming with joy as he collected the highly coveted meat tray. Thanks to our generous partners at SA Gourmet Meats in Magill, John was treated to an impressive selection of premium cuts, enough to make any barbecue enthusiast envious.
The evening proved to be a resounding success, filled with learning, laughter, and camaraderie. As members mingled and exchanged ideas, there was a strong sense of excitement about the future of the North East Budgerigar Society in their new home. With insightful presentations like Peter Thurn’s, it’s clear that this is just the beginning of many great meetings to come.
