BCSA Budgie Bulletin: Weekly Wrap & Look Ahead

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Budgie Bulletin!

This weekend, Auburn, just outside of Clare, became a hub of warmth and camaraderie as budgerigar enthusiasts from across the state gathered for the Port Pirie Budgerigar Club aviary visit. As always, the day was filled with joy, and this year was no exception. After quickly breezing through the formalities, everyone eagerly made their way to one of two destinations—the incredible spread of food or the ever-impressive aviaries.

In Tony’s bird room, we gathered, exchanging stories and solving the world’s problems, while Angela worked her magic, preparing a feast that brought everyone together. It’s truly heartwarming to see the Port Pirie Club meetings flourishing, with so many visitors and guests filling the space with laughter, smiles and a shared passion. This day was a beautiful reminder of the strong bonds and vibrant community that our love for budgerigars has built.

Last week, we gave you a sneak peek into the excitement building up to the highly anticipated Budgie Fest. This week, we’re thrilled to unveil the official Sponsor and Member shirts—now available to order online! These fantastic polos, available in both Men’s and Women’s sizes, are the perfect way to show your support and be part of the buzz. Don’t miss out—place your order now and snag one of these amazing shirts before they fly off the shelves! There is a 5-week lead time on production of these, and we will be placing the order in the coming days, so get in quickly if you’re eager to be in the official BCSA kit.

Get ready for a week of excitement as the annual BSSA trivia night rolls in—always a highlight of the year! This lively evening promises plenty of fun, with a variety of prizes up for grabs. We’re continuing our early start to give everyone a chance to dive into some “budgie banter” before the trivia kicks off. It’s the perfect opportunity to connect, share our passion, and celebrate the camaraderie that keeps our clubs and associated bodies thriving. The energy and enthusiasm in the budgerigar community are truly inspiring, and this event is a fantastic way to be a part of it.

Meanwhile, looking interstate, the Moreton Budgerigar Association in Queensland is gearing up for their 2024 Spring Show this Sunday, September 1st, at the Strathpine Community Centre. Whether you have birds to enter or just want to soak in the atmosphere, you’re invited to join the fun. Come watch the judging, catch up with fellow enthusiasts, and enjoy some delicious food and drink available at a nominal cost. It’s going to be a great day for budgie lovers of all kinds!

Budgie Auctions & Sales

If you’re reading this, congratulations—you’ve survived the storm that is auction season! Your wallet might be feeling a bit lighter, but hey, nothing compares to that spring in your step as you stroll into your bird room, eyeing that new outcross that’s bursting with potential for 2024. Sure, your bank account might be on a diet, and the birds might be eating better than you, but your bird room may have just hit a feathered jackpot! Only time will tell.

And just when you thought it was safe to relax, there are still a few more online auctions on the horizon for those needing that weekly auction fix. Plus the big one—Bruce Sheppard’s dispersal sale on Saturday, September 14th. More details of the event are coming soon, so don’t pack those quarantine cages away just yet! In fact, Aussie Pet Connections are already taking pre-bidding registrations, before the catalogue has come out – there is that level of interest.

BSSA Online Auction 22 for 2024

BSSA Auction 22 for 2024 features 12 birds from Graham McCallum and George England. Varieties include Spangle Double Factors, Lacewings, Texas Clearbodies, and more. The event starts on August 26th and ends a day later than usual on September 2nd. Bids are strictly anonymous, identified only by your secret bidder number. Keep in mind, buyers, that freight costs are on you, so check those bird locations. Make sure to register your phone number for easy contact if you win. Most vendors are nice enough to offer free transport to the airport and even combine shipments to save you some cash.

All proceeds from the auction go toward promoting the BSSA and supporting the greater hobby, so bid generously and have some fun! For more details and to start bidding, visit the link below.

James Matthews & Pam Hewitt Auctions 1, 2 & 3

Welcome to the James Matthews Pam Hewitt Auction for 2024. Please note that three auctions are running simultaneously, each scheduled to conclude on the same night with slightly staggered finish times. This strategic arrangement allows all purchases to be finalised at once, ensuring buyers do not need to wait days or weeks for birds from the second and third auctions to become available. This also streamlines the process, facilitating the shipping or collection of all birds in a single go.

To enhance the bidding experience, the varieties have been mixed across all three auctions. This change is based on valuable feedback indicating that when birds of the same variety were grouped into a single 20-bird auction, participants struggled to bid on everything they desired.

Port Pirie Budgerigar Society – Tour of Carawah Aviaries

Date: 15th September 2024
Location: 74 Dartmouth Street, Port Augusta

The Port Pirie Budgerigar Society of South Australia Inc. has organized a unique opportunity for bird enthusiasts in South Australia. Members are invited to visit the extensive aviaries of Brian and Beverley Reichelt on the 15th of September from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm at 74 Dartmouth Street, Port Augusta.

Following the aviary tour, there is an option to arrange a luncheon at the Arid Gardens, subject to the number of participants. Brian and Beverley’s operation features 78 covered aviaries housing approximately 240 birds, including Macaws, Amazon Parrots, Asiatic Parrots, Conures, African Parrots, and Budgerigars. This is a rare chance to see the latest colour mutations in parrots that are seldom viewed by the public. Recognizing that the travel distance may be a concern, we highly recommend carpooling to enhance the travel experience with conversation and camaraderie.

This special event is not limited to Port Pirie Club members but is also open to members of Adelaide clubs. Please notify Peter Glassenbury by the 30th of August if you wish to attend the aviary visit and the luncheon. Contact him at 0409 288 710 or [email protected] to confirm your participation and secure bookings for both the tour and the luncheon. This is an opportunity not to be missed!

The ANBC has released the following statement:

We understand that there’s been quite a bit of information shared recently regarding the ANBC and our privacy policy. This is because we’re excited to introduce a new monthly ANBC newsletter, tailored specifically for fanciers and enthusiasts across the country. Up until now, the ANBC has communicated directly with the States and Zones, but we want to connect with you personally through this newsletter, which will be launching later this month.

The newsletter will be available in electronic format, making it easy for you to access and enjoy. For those who prefer a physical copy, you can simply print it out and savour it over your favourite cup of tea or coffee – we won’t be making hard copies available.

While many small businesses and not-for-profit organisations with an annual turnover of $3 million or less don’t need a privacy policy, we made one, only because we wanted to be completely transparent with and clarify our intentions. We’re only using your information to send you the newsletter – nothing more. Rest assured, we’re not selling your data, or worst still, sharing it with anyone else. Plain and simple, we’d just like to send you a newsletter, to keep you up to date. And if you’d prefer not to receive the ANBC newsletter, that’s perfectly okay too – we won’t take it personally.

To ensure we have your permission to send the newsletter directly to you, we’ve asked the states and zones to confirm that their members are happy for us to communicate with you. So, you might see something from them, with an Opt In option for the ANBC. That’s going to allow them to pass your email address onto us. You can also opt in directly using the link below, which will allow you to subscribe to the newsletter audience.

If you decide later that the newsletter isn’t for you, there will be an easy unsubscribe button at the top of the email, and we won’t bother you again. Again, we wont take it personally, but we secretly think you’ll love it once you see it. We’re really looking forward to having you be part of this new chapter for the ANBC!
