Welcome to this week’s edition of the Budgie Bulletin!
It’s been an exciting week for budgerigar enthusiasts in South Australia as we officially launched Budgie Fest 2024 to the media! 🦜
On Wednesday, BCSA President Troy Holmes joined David Penberthy and Will Goodings on Adelaide’s FIVEaa, where the real star of the show was a baby crested budgie. In a fun twist, callers nicknamed him after Port Adelaide’s Dan Houston—because while he can’t fly just yet, it won’t be long before he takes off! 🐦⚡
The buzz didn’t stop there! The news of Budgie Fest 2024 spread far and wide across Power FM in the Adelaide Hills, South Coast, and Murray Lands, as well as Magic 89.9 in Port Lincoln, thanks to our amazing partners at Media Stable. We’ve also successfully put up signage at over 30 grain, fodder, and pet stores, stretching from Victor Harbor to Gawler! A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this possible—your support is invaluable in activating the hobby across the state.
Stay tuned as we continue the countdown to South Australia’s biggest budgie celebration. 🌟

This week was packed with important developments in the South Australian budgerigar community. The United Birds Society of South Australia (UBSSA) held their Annual General Meeting, bringing together passionate bird enthusiasts and representatives from various clubs. The meeting was a productive opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the past year, set new goals, and strengthen the bird-keeping community for the year ahead. Discussions centered around insurance, the recent taxation issues that have been highlighted for volunteer and hobby groups, as well as enhancing local events such as the UBSSA Seminar, and expanding participation across the state.
Meanwhile, on the national stage, the Australian National Budgerigar Council (ANBC) convened their Live Streaming Working Group. This gathering focused on advancing the future of the National Show by building upon the resounding success of Launceston 2024. The group explored innovative ways to enhance the show’s online presence, making it more accessible and engaging for a wider audience. Their vision is to deliver a more dynamic and interactive experience for viewers, allowing the National Show to reach new heights in 2025 and beyond.
These meetings highlight the dedication and collaboration within the Australian budgerigar community, working tirelessly to elevate the profile of bird keeping and ensure the ongoing success of both local and national events.
In the upcoming week, we’re excited for the Balaklava Show, the only agricultural show in South Australia that proudly features caged birds. This unique event has attracted significant interest, with over 70 birds already entered by well-known BCSA fanciers such as Michael Smith, Trevor Russell, Bob Simpson, the Holmes Family, Con Orfanos, and Graham McCallum.
Renowned South Australian judge Larry Jeffries will oversee the competition, ensuring that every bird is assessed with expertise and precision. The anticipation is high, and we can’t wait to see which entries soar to the top! Stay tuned for the results, which we’ll share with you in our next edition.
This weekend, don’t miss the Adelaide Bird Expo, hosted by the Aviculture Society of South Australia (ASSA) in Fullarton! It promises to be a vibrant gathering for bird lovers, with both the BSSA and NEBS in attendance, offering a range of birds for sale.
The event is open to the public from 11 AM to 1 PM, so if you’re free, we encourage you to come along and show your support. It’s a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow enthusiasts, discover new birds, and expand your avian knowledge. Entry is just $3.00, making it an affordable and fun outing for the whole family.
