Welcome to this week’s edition of the Budgie Bulletin!
It’s been another busy week in the world of budgerigars, starting with the vibrant Balaklava Show last Saturday and continuing with the Avicultural Society of South Australia (ASSA) Adelaide Bird Expo on the Sunday. We also enjoyed a lively evening at the BSSA’s Come & Try, Buy Swap and Sell event. At a national level, the Australian National Budgerigar Council (ANBC) has been engaging in discussions about its future, sharing updates via email to the States and Zones, following the recent working group meetings. The ANBC’s flagship publication, the ANBC Gazette also went out this week. Internationally, the WBO World Show was also held over the weekend, with Australia’s own Stephen Mow one of the judges. We’re also excited to share with you an early bird competition thanks to our partners at TRILL™ Expert and the Bend Motorsport Park. Finally, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry have released a video on preventative strategies for minimising the risk of any Avian Flu, which we will share with you.
The Balaclava Show was a fantastic success, showcasing 66 beautiful birds and attracting many enthusiastic visitors to the pavilion! The atmosphere was vibrant, with plenty of pictures taken by attendees and engaging conversations shared among bird lovers. Exciting discussions took place, further connecting the community around our shared passion for aviculture.
Looking ahead, there’s a wonderful plan to reintroduce finches to next year’s show, which will surely enhance the experience for everyone involved. The Port Pirie club is also busy crafting innovative ideas to boost participation and make the 2025 event even more rewarding!
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to making this event possible, and we were thrilled to come so close to reaching the numbers required for the event to be a Major Awards show. Congratulations to Bob Simpson for winning Grand Champion with a Cinnamon Grey Cock.

The ASSA Bird Expo was a tremendous success, attracting a large turnout of passionate avian enthusiasts! Both the BSSA and North East clubs showcased their tables, creating a vibrant atmosphere that highlighted the exciting growth potential within the hobby.
The event drew an impressive crowd, with a long line that extended back into the car park and even spilled onto Fullarton Road. Inside the hall, visitors were treated to stunning displays of various avian species and a diverse array of stalls from avian suppliers.
Enquiries came from a wide demographic, spanning the Barossa Valley, Mildura, Mount Gambier, and Yorke Peninsula (Wallaroo). Attendees were eager to learn about the varieties on display, best practices for feeding and caring for birds, plans for new aviaries, and, most importantly, how to get involved with memberships and upcoming meetings and activities.
Overall, the day was a resounding success for aviculture and the budgie clubs represented. We look forward to building on this momentum for future events! |
|
The weekend of shows and expos seamlessly led into the BSSA’s vibrant Come & Try Night held on Tuesday evening, featuring a fantastic buy-swap-sell event. The turnout was impressive, and attendees enjoyed the opportunity to take home some wonderful birds from our generous Intermediate and Open breeders. The evening brought in several new faces, and by it’s end, the BSSA had proudly welcomed four new members into their community. It’s always uplifting to see enthusiastic newcomers eager to join and contribute in a shared passion for aviculture. This success not only strengthens our community but also ensures that the next generation is ready to keep our love for birds alive and thriving. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to making this event a success and for helping to grow the budgerigar community! |

This week, the ANBC has reached out to states and zones with an important question: “Considering the evolving needs and future direction of the ANBC, do you believe our current structure effectively supports our goals? Should we explore restructuring, and if so, what changes would you propose to enhance our effectiveness?”
The ANBC is keen to hear your thoughts on how we can thrive in the coming years. They’re interested in understanding what an ideal structure might look like, what we aim to achieve as a community, and how we can continue to deliver an exceptional Nationals experience while building on our existing successes. Your input is vital as we look to shape the future of our National body.
Further abroad, the WBO held their World Championship Show in Austria. Australian National judge Stephen Mow made the trip over, and had this to say about the birds:
“Never seen so many outstanding budgerigars in one place. I was able to bring through both Grand Champion (light green) and Opp Sex (Dominant Pied) from their respective classes. This has been a judging experience of a life-time. Cheers Stephen👍👍”
Congratulations to Daniel Lutolf, who won Best in Show, and Best Opp Sex. |

Finally, the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has released an insightful video in their Biosecurity Matters Newsletter, detailing essential strategies for breeders to minimise the risk of Avian Flu. The specific H5 strain of the virus that has led to significant poultry deaths overseas, is not currently present in Australia. That being said, precautions need to be taken to minimise the transmission of the virus. It can be carried by wild birds such as ducks, geese, and swans, which pose a risk to backyard poultry and pet birds when they mix.
The Department recommends that if you own or work with birds, it’s crucial to monitor for health changes, as signs of avian influenza can resemble other bird diseases. Key symptoms include sudden deaths, diarrhea, reduced appetite, decreased egg production, and general illness. To protect your birds, avoid feeding or attracting wild birds, use netting to prevent contact, regularly clean housing and equipment, and isolate any new birds for at least 30 days.
While avian influenza poses a low risk to humans, practicing good hygiene is essential—wash hands after handling birds or equipment, and clean clothing and shoes after visiting bird facilities.
You can watch the video by clicking the link here. |
