Welcome to this week’s edition of the Budgie Bulletin!
It’s been a lively week for budgerigar enthusiasts in South Australia, with both the BSSA and NEBS hosting their monthly meetings.
The BSSA event featured a virtual aviary tour of the Holmes Family aviaries. The presentation began with an in-depth look at the aviary setup and its development since 1987, guided by a continuous improvement approach. The second segment highlighted various gadgets designed to streamline the bird room, including a ware washer, incubator, Egg Buddy, and other efficient tools. The final part covered feeding regimes, focusing on crop feeding for chicks—a valuable insight for breeders. The audience thoroughly enjoyed the presentation. Congratulations to Tom Sismey for winning the raffle!
The following night, NEBS held their meeting, shifted a week earlier than usual. Despite the change throwing a few regulars off, new members and novice breeders eagerly attended, taking advantage of the opportunity to pick up excellent birds. The event featured three tables filled with budgerigar books, tender birds, and novice giveaway birds, while members contributed young, and also UBC birds, ideal for those interested in hand-taming pets. Congratulations to Con Orfanos for taking home the meat tray!
Both meetings offered fantastic insights and community spirit, highlighting the dedication to budgerigar breeding in South Australia!
Looking further afield, you’re invited to join the budgerigar fraternity here in South Australia this Sunday for the BSSA vs NEBS Juvenile Bird Shield at Ascot Park Scout Hall. Whether you’re entering birds or simply coming to enjoy the day, all members and friends are warmly invited to attend. This is a fantastic chance to connect with fellow club members in a relaxed, friendly setting. Lunch will be provided, so please let the Club know if you’re attending without entering birds to ensure they cater accurately. Judging commences at 10 am, with presentations at 2 pm. For those exhibiting, please remember BSSA rules, so all cages are to be fitted with a White D drinker half filled with equal parts of plain canary, Japanese and white millet.
Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to spend time with our budgerigar community—hope to see you there!

Interclub 24 – BSSA Vs NEBS🏆
🗓 Date: Sunday, 10 November
📍 Location: Ascot Park Scout Hall
Mark your calendars for the BSSA annual Interclub Challenge with the North East Budgerigar Society on Sunday, 10 November 2024! This year’s event will be extra special, as it will feature, for the very first time, current year rung birds (2024 red ringers) as the focus of the Interclub challenge.
Please note the new venue: Ascot Park Scout Hall, located at 51 Sixth Avenue, Ascot Park. Let’s hope for good weather to make it a fantastic day! 🤞🌤️
The BSSA’s long-standing rivalry with NEBS dates back to 1978, with the competition being held every year except for two (due to extreme weather and COVID). The scoreboard remains impressively close after 44 events, with NEBS leading at 24 wins to BSSA’s 20.
Below is a picture of the coveted Interclub Trophy, which will be up for grabs once again. Get ready for a thrilling day of competition and may the best club win! 🐦🏅
