Budgerigar Buzz – A Big Week in the Bird World!
There’s been plenty happening in the world of budgerigars this week, with exciting developments across the State as clubs prepare for a busy show season ahead. Today also happens to be National Pet Day, as we take a moment to celebrate our feathered friends, and the human stories behind these wonderful birds!
National Motions Take Flight
The Australian National Budgerigar Council (ANBC) has released the agenda for its upcoming AGM in June, with three key motions tabled for discussion. Two of these have come from North Queensland, proposing notable calendar changes:
- That the ring issue date be brought forward to 1st September, and
- That the ANBC National Show be moved to the second week of June, rather than its current slot.
The third motion, submitted by South Australia, suggests a visual update to The Standard. Specifically, this would introduce a new angle of view that more clearly displays correct wing and secondary feather placement, while also ensuring the eye of the bird remains fully visible. This motion responds in part to growing murmurs from European around visibility and facial features in the modern exhibition budgerigar.
SA Judges Unite
On Sunday, South Australian judges gathered for a vibrant meeting that touched on several key aspects of The Standard. It was also a valuable opportunity to discuss upcoming changes to this year’s Logan Shield State Selection Show—an essential step in selecting South Australia’s top team to represent at the Nationals in Cairns this May. The room was full of enthusiasm and shared purpose as preparations kick into high gear.
NEBS Hosts an Engaging Evening
Wednesday night saw the North East Budgerigar Society (NEBS) host a highly engaging presentation on exhibition faults, with renowned judge and breeder Nigel Tonkin leading the session. His interactive style brought everyone into the conversation, inviting attendees to reflect on their own experiences with various faults as defined in The Standard. Nigel’s deep knowledge and charismatic delivery earned him plenty of praise.

|
A highlight of the night was the “Bird of the Night” award, which went to the Black Eyed Self variety. In a surprising twist, Tom Sismey and Jane Kelb had brought these birds along for a different reason entirely, and it was Tom who walked away with the coveted Lindt Chocolate Bunny in somewhat of a Steven Bradbury moment. The ever-popular meat tray raffle was won by John Farrugia-Gay.
Adding to the celebration, the night also marked the 51st birthday of the North East Budgerigar Club! Members tucked into a delicious cheesecake—although not everyone could enjoy it, as Troy found out the hard way that it wasn’t coeliac-friendly! |

ABC Breakfast Radio Interview
This week, BCSA President Troy Holmes joined Kim Napier on ABC Breakfast Radio in Launceston to discuss the lasting impact of the Launceston Nationals on the budgerigar community in Tasmania. Kim was curious about how the event had influenced the local scene, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Not only have clubs like Hobart reported a 20% increase in membership, but perhaps more significantly, there’s been a noticeable shift in public perception—with birdkeeping becoming more mainstream and widely accepted.
Local fanciers, including Peter Kross, shared how the Nationals helped spark conversations beyond the usual circles. What was once a niche interest is now becoming a common talking point, with more people learning about the exhibition side of the hobby. The Nationals didn’t just showcase beautiful birds—it helped shine a light on the passionate community behind them and brought budgies into the spotlight across Tasmania.

Northern Star Weekly, Victoria
Budgies were back in the media spotlight in Victoria too this week thanks to a feature in the Northern Star Weekly, which highlighted the upcoming United Budgie Bonanza. The article gave fantastic coverage to the hobby, with Vice President Steven Bradley explaining that the event is about more than just showcasing birds—it’s about celebrating a nationwide community that comes together each year for the Budgerigar Nationals, where the best birds represent their states.
Bradley, who first discovered his passion for budgerigars while on holiday in Perth, shared how welcoming and knowledgeable the club is. “We’ve got heaps of knowledge in the club and we love sharing it,” he said. “It’s just a great hobby and a good social event.” The article perfectly captured the spirit of the event and the strong sense of connection within the budgie community.
