BCSA Budgie Bulletin: Weekly Wrap & Look Ahead

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Budgie Bulletin!

This weekend gone, many of our dedicated fanciers ventured interstate in search of the elusive outcross. Melton Auction in Victoria was well attended, as was Moreton in South Queensland. From all reports, our fanciers had a wonderful time with their interstate counterparts for the weekend, and many came home with their bucket full, new outcrosses in tow, slightly lighter pockets, and a renewed vigour for this fantastic hobby.

ANBC Logo Design

The voting for the Logo and Concept has been finalized. Each zone cast votes as follows: 1st place received 3 votes, 2nd place received 2 votes, and 3rd place received 1 vote. Some zones only voted for their first choice, while others followed the complete voting process.

The final result is unanimous, with Concept 1 emerging as the clear winner, receiving all 21 votes. The minor placements were distributed among the other concepts, with Concepts 2 and 3 each receiving 6 votes. This demonstrates the strong preference for Concept 1.

The ANBC wishes to advise that Concept 1 will now be incorporated into their website and all associated correspondence. That being said, the Logie Logo, the ANBC heritage logo for future National Winners, will remain unchanged.

BCSA Annual Judges Meeting

Looking ahead, this weekend we have a BCSA judges meeting. All BCSA judges, except the three new ones, have BCSA judges shirts, and there’s a proposal for all judges to receive BCSA polos to be purchased with available sponsorship funds available if adopted.

The meeting will look at live examples of unusual birds, such as Saddlebacks, Darkwings, and Rainbows that are within the ANBC Standard. These will be discussed with examples, with a proposed AOSV class timeline extending to potential point assessment to 2030. Additional unusual birds like YF/WC and GF/WC combinations, Cinnamon wing Greywings, and Melanistic Spangles will also be covered off on display and discussed. The meeting will also cover off the ANBC Judges Meeting, where the flecking action plan was highlighted, along with the need for more data on Melanistic Spangles.

Nigel Tonkin will present his observations from the Nationals, which include decreased flecking, but increased wing issues. Discussions will also focus on the judging process for Major Awards locally, as well as the appropriate time for persisting with bird perching attempts, and interstate judges’ contributions. Other items, such as the Best of Status and Best in Show process at the Logan Shield, and the BSSA show schedules’ alignment with national standards, will also be covered off. Finally, the judges will comment on exhibitors entering multiple birds in the one class at the Logan Shield.

Club Calendar

The August meeting of the Budgerigar Society of South Australia (BSSA) will feature a new start time of 7pm. Doors will open at this time to provide members and visitors with additional time to socialize and discuss all things related to budgies before the general meeting commences at 7:30pm. Supper and a chat over coffee will take place before the meeting, rather than after, though some refreshments will still be available following the meeting at 9pm. This pre-meeting social time is being introduced as “Budgie Banter.”

This meeting itself will feature a unique presentation on “Breeding Program Continuous Improvement – What Are the 1%ers That You Can Integrate into Your Breeding Season to Improve Your Results.” Six senior breeders will rotate among the tables, sharing their expertise on the breeding season and addressing any general questions. Each senior member will spend 10 minutes at each table, offering a valuable opportunity to learn from their experience.

The club will also provide pizzas as part of the Budgie Banter, so members are encouraged to arrive promptly at 7pm. Additionally, the “Bird of the Night” for this meeting will be the Spangle, Spangle AOSV, and Spangle Double Factor.

Port Pirie Budgerigar Society – Tour of Carawah Aviaries

The Port Pirie Budgerigar Society of South Australia Inc. has organized a unique opportunity for bird enthusiasts in South Australia. Members are invited to visit the extensive aviaries of Brian and Beverley Reichelt on the 15th of September from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm at 74 Dartmouth Street, Port Augusta.

Following the aviary tour, there is an option to arrange a luncheon at the Arid Gardens, subject to the number of participants. Brian and Beverley’s operation features 78 covered aviaries housing approximately 240 birds, including Macaws, Amazon Parrots, Asiatic Parrots, Conures, African Parrots, and Budgerigars. This is a rare chance to see the latest colour mutations in parrots that are seldom viewed by the public. Recognizing that the travel distance may be a concern, we highly recommend carpooling to enhance the travel experience with conversation and camaraderie.

This special event is not limited to Port Pirie Club members but is also open to members of Adelaide clubs. Please notify Peter Glassenbury by the 30th of August if you wish to attend the aviary visit and the luncheon. Contact him at 0409 288 710 or [email protected] to confirm your participation and secure bookings for both the tour and the luncheon. This is an opportunity not to be missed!

North East Meeting, August 14th 2024

This event will feature the North East AGM plus interview with a Veteran breeder – this year will be Graeme Alchin nominated as the veteran.
