BCSA Budgie Bulletin: Weekly Wrap & Look Ahead

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Budgie Bulletin!

🐦 Weekly Wrap-Up: Celebrating Community, Shows, and Smiles in South Australian Budgerigars 🐦

This past week has been a shining example of why the budgerigar community continues to thrive—not just in South Australia, but across Australia. From the spirited competition in Port Pirie to new member sign-ups and exciting auction developments, the week has been filled with meaningful moments, strong camaraderie, and anticipation for the events ahead.

Port Pirie Harry Johnson Show

Port Pirie was the place to be on Sunday for the Harry Johnson Young Bird Show, and it certainly lived up to expectations. Congratulations go to Shiralee Reardon, who claimed the prestigious title of Grand Champion, and to Geoff Edwards with Best Opposite Sex.

Beyond the judging and awards, what truly made the event special was the infectious spirit of community. Shows like these are more than just about birds on the bench; they’re about the people behind them. The smiles were plentiful and genuine, the laughter was easy, and the camaraderie was undeniable. Budgerigar shows are a rare combination of passion, pride, and mateship—and Port Pirie delivered all three in spades.

For many, it’s not about the ribbon or the rosette—it’s the joy of being among fellow fanciers, talking birds, sharing stories, and celebrating each other’s successes. The saying “not just winners are grinners” could not have been more fitting. From junior breeders to seasoned exhibitors, everyone left with a smile. ❤️

Lower Murray Bird Expo

Meanwhile, the Lower Murray Bird Expo proved to be a brilliant showcase of what makes the avian hobby so welcoming. Held in a vibrant, family-friendly atmosphere, the event was both educational and community-driven at the Murray Bridge Racecourse.

The North East Budgerigar Society (NEBS) took full advantage of the day, welcoming five new members into their fold. Likewise, the Budgerigar Council of South Australia (BCSA) signed up four fresh faces, expanding its ever-growing community of enthusiastic breeders. Thanks to the hard work of those who made it possible.

A special thank you goes to the Lower Murray Bird Club for hosting such a well-run and enjoyable expo. From the trade tables to the friendly conversations, everything ran smoothly, creating the perfect platform for clubs to connect with potential new members. ❤️

Geelong Auction

Interstate, the Geelong Auction drew breeders from near and far, with 194 birds catalogued and offered on the day. The range of quality stock available reflected the strength of Victoria’s breeding community and underscored the importance of these auctions in circulating strong genetics across the country.

Birds sold well, and the enthusiasm among buyers was matched by the pride of sellers presenting their finest. For many, the Geelong Auction continues to be one of the highlights of the bird sale calendar, and this year’s event certainly upheld its reputation.

Preparations for the Stan Watson Breeders Show

Back in Adelaide, the Budgerigar Society of South Australia (BSSA) committee convened on Monday night to lock in the final preparations for two key events on the horizon: the Stan Watson Breeders Show and a special presentation from James Bader.

Both events have generated considerable buzz among local fanciers. The Stan Watson Show is always a great opportunity to see last year’s best Young Birds and to assess how they are developing under the rigour of show conditions. With a good number of entries, expectations are high for a strong showing on Sunday under Show Manager George England.

ANBC Motions

On the national front, the ANBC has recently updated its list of motions for the upcoming June AGM. Notably, two motions have been withdrawn, leaving only South Australia’s motion up for formal consideration.

This development focuses attention solely on South Australia’s proposal. It will be interesting to see how it is received by the wider budgerigar community, with many eyes looking to June for the outcome.

Auction Catalogues Released

Adding to the excitement this week, two major live auction catalogues have been released. The National Auction Catalogue is now live, featuring a stellar lineup of birds selected from some of the best breeders across Australia. This auction has become a vital component of the ANBC calendar, not only for acquiring top-quality pairs, but also for supporting the National titles.

At the same time, the Capricornia Budgerigar Society’s Annual Live Auction Catalogue is also out. Scheduled for Sunday, 8th June 2025, this event features over 200 birds and includes contributions from 37 breeders, including some of Australia’s most respected names. The catalogue itself is an impressive read, filled with birds backed by elite bloodlines, including winners at the national level.

From Lutinos and Black Eyed Selfs to Clearbodies and Danish Recessive Pieds, the diversity on offer ensures something for every fancier. Previews, photos, and even trade stalls will help make this a highlight event for June.

Looking Ahead

The week ahead is all about preparation, participation, and presence.

  • Saturday night, it’s time to join the BSSA community at Unley for James Bader’s talk. Hosted at the Unley Community Centre, the session kicks off at 6 pm, and promises a mix of insight, humour, and plenty of discussion. It’s more than just a presentation—it’s a chance to connect, learn, and enjoy a slice or two of pizza with fellow enthusiasts.
  • Sunday, the much-anticipated Stan Watson Breeders Show takes place at Ascot Park Scout Hall. With strong numbers expected and a quality bench guaranteed, it’s a must-attend for anyone serious about the hobby.

Latest Update on Bird Flu (H7N8)

The most recent information on Bird Flu (H7N8) is outlined below. The key takeaway for bird owners is the importance of maintaining strict biosecurity measures. The good news is that it looks like the controlled area is reducing, which means that they’re getting on top of things. Vigilance is still required:

Keep sheds, yards, aviaries, and equipment clean
Ensure footwear is clean before entering bird areas
Wash hands thoroughly before and after handling birds or eggs

Staying vigilant with hygiene practices is essential in protecting your birds and preventing the spread of disease. Note that poultry and bird sales, shows, markets and auctions or other gatherings within the control and restricted areas are prohibited until further notice.

ANBC Trivia

In the lead-up to the Nationals, the ANBC has been sharing Throwback Thursday trivia each week—have you been keeping up? Are you a true budgie buff with the knowledge to answer these fun and challenging questions? It’s a great way to test your memory, learn some history, and get into the Nationals spirit!

This week’s question relates to the people and partnerships knocking on the door of the Hall of Fame Breeder’s Excellence Division.

Do you know who is sitting just outside the Hall of Fame?

To answer the trivia question from last week is Goldenface and Whitecap. No ANBC Hall of Fame Breeder’s Excellence entrant has won the Australian Golden Face, or the White Cap Class. There’s a challenge!

In Closing

Whether it was in Port Pirie, the Lower Murray, Geelong, or gathered around a committee table in Unley, this week has reminded us all of the power of community within the budgerigar world. Behind every show bird is a breeder, and behind every breeder is a network of support, friendship, and shared passion.

Be sure to join the BSSA this Saturday night, and share that network of friendship, and again on the Sunday at the Stan Watson Show.

Until next week.
