Welcome to this week’s edition of the Budgie Bulletin!
This weekend, the Port Pirie Club took a break from their usual budgerigar-focused activities and embarked on a unique adventure, visiting a renowned parrot breeder in Port Augusta, about 350 km north of Adelaide. The cohort were treated to an impressive and vibrant collection of colorful parrots, a rare sight for many of our members who typically only see budgies. In a delightful twist, the largest display of Rainbow budgies was also on show, adding to the excitement.
Initially, there was some scepticism about the long journey to Port Augusta, but the response was overwhelmingly positive. Carpooling was quickly arranged, and 18 members from both North Adelaide and Adelaide made the trip. After the tour, everyone enjoyed a relaxed lunch at the Arid Gardens, just north of Port Augusta, where they were treated to a delicious café-style menu.
For those interested in visiting this extraordinary aviary operation, which boasts nearly 80 enclosed aviaries, Brian Reichelt can be contacted at 0418 896 995 for a warm and informative excursion into the fascinating world of parrots. A heartfelt thank you goes out to our gracious hosts from the club!
At a macro level, the camaraderie and social connections formed at these events are truly the secret sauce that keeps our clubs vibrant and thriving. It’s experiences like these that serve as the lifeblood of our community, ensuring our shared passion remains relevant and strong for years to come.

Here in Adelaide, it’s been a busy week with committee meetings in full swing. Both the BSSA and NEBS have held their respective gatherings, ensuring everything is on track for their meetings to see out 2024. The BCSA have also released the details of the Tri Club Cup Interclub Challenge, to be held as part of Budgie Fest this year. Details can be found further down in the Budgie Fest section.
Looking ahead to this Sunday, United Birds will convene for their AGM in Payneham, bringing the local bird community together once again. United Birds is a great advocate for bird clubs within the state, and it’s critical that we continue to support them.
On a sad note, we received the news this week that the North East’s sponsorship of Adelaide Zoo’s budgie exhibit has come to an end, following the passing of the sole bush budgie on display. While this is a sad moment for the exhibit, rest assured that we will be advocating for replacements to ensure birds remain part of the zoo’s attractions.
Zoos play a crucial role in sparking people’s interest in birds and aviculture. For many, a visit to the zoo is their first encounter with native bird species, sparking a lifelong fascination. Exhibits like the budgie display provide an accessible and engaging way for people—especially children—to experience the beauty and diversity of birds up close. These interactions often serve as the first step toward nurturing an appreciation for birdkeeping, conservation, and even more specialised interests like breeding and aviculture. Ensuring birds remain a prominent feature at the zoo helps foster the next generation of budgerigar enthusiasts.
Shifting our focus interstate, a significant gathering of enthusiasts came together in South Queensland for the highly anticipated All-Queensland Super Show. This two-day event drew a crowd of fanciers and featured interstate judges and guest speakers in Peter Thurn from the BCV and our very own Troy Holmes. They joined Gary Menzies and Neale Love from South Queensland on the judging panel.
The presentations were a highlight of the event, receiving an overwhelmingly positive response. Peter delivered an insightful talk on genetics, focusing on genetic improvement and gains, while Troy offered a captivating virtual tour of his bird room, providing an in-depth look at his breeding setup. It was an enriching experience for all who attended! |

From all reports, the Bruce Sheppard dispersal sale was a successful day, with some great birds being spread across the country. This week, we feature online auctions from the BSSA, Clay, Borg & Skivington, and Wayne Cachia.
