Welcome to this week’s edition of the Budgie Bulletin!
This week, the Port Pirie Budgerigar Society hosted their Hutchinson Annual Show in Crystal brook, attracting a strong turnout. A total of 202 birds were entered, with 152 making it to the bench for judges Kerry Murphy and George England to assess. Congratulations to Bob Simpson for winning Grand Champion, Tony Vandenbrink for securing Best Intermediate, and the Longbottom Family for achieving Best Novice.

The BSSA also held their “Christmas in July” event at the Goodwood Hotel on Tuesday evening. The sold-out event saw 30 of the Club’s members come together to celebrate the evening. The event coincided with a birthday for Mike Crossley, so the Club had a fantastic social night.

| This weekend, the BSSA is hosting their Annual Ron Norman Any Age Show. For those who don’t know the event’s namesake, Ron Norman was a long serving member of the BSSA. He held many positions including that of Club President and Trading Officer. Ron was a Major Award judge and spent much of his time circulating amongst the various SA clubs offering advice and judging birds. He was an ANBC delegate and was always willing and able to help out all members, especially new novice members of the day. In addition, he was also a bird career for the SA team at many National titles, and won the Hens Class at the 1996 ANBC Show. Ron served as an example to all members of unquestionable service to the hobby.
This year’s show is the 75th Anniversary show. This year’s event will be held on Sunday 7th July 2024 at the Westbourne Park Memorial Hall, 388 Goodwood Road, Westbourne Park, and is open to the public from 11 AM to 1 PM. The BSSA are encouraging the public to get along and support the event – entry to the venue is free.
The BSSA is also supporting the United Bird Societies of South Australia (UBSSA) in it’s efforts at the Animal Expo. The event runs from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM Saturday and Sunday at the Adelaide Show Grounds. The BSSA will only be in attendance on the Saturday, due to the clash with the Ron Norman on the Sunday. | On Wednesday the 10th, the North East Budgerigar Society are hosting their Christmas in July. There are still 6 seats available, for what promises to be a great evening. NEBS are hosting the event at the Hotel Windsor.

| Shifting gears, Sam & Jo Pearson have a 3-year-old male blue budgie (Frankie) who is a Spangle Opaline dark factor blue cock that they are looking to rehome. They are not seeking any payment but were hoping the BCSA could help support rehoming Frankie to a great new set of owners, where he will be looked after.
Frankie was initially bought from a pet shop and has no apparent health issues. He mainly lives in a cage inside and outside, weather permitting. His wings aren’t clipped, so he does free fly around the house from time to time. He has not had a lot of training, but is happiest sitting on a shoulder, or someone’s head, versus being held or petted. Frankie will come with his cage (which is still sturdy and secure), although the white plastic base has discolored slightly in the sun.

| As we look further afield and interstate, the Bird Flu has been garnering much media attention over the past few months. The following article from ABC serves as an important reminder for all bird keepers to maintain cleanliness in their facilities and to minimize the risk of wild birds accessing and contaminating aviaries. The virus in question spreads easily and could potentially shut down our hobby in certain areas if it continues to spread. Vigilance is essential.
The virus can spread through means other than birds, as demonstrated by the outbreak in the ACT. Biosecurity authorities have confirmed that the virus was introduced to the ACT from New South Wales through the transportation of eggs and associated materials for commercial grading. |

This week boasts a series of exciting upcoming auctions, with catalogues released for Bendigo on July 14th and Melton on July 27th. Notably, for the first time in a while, the BCSA has not identified any online auctions scheduled for this week.

Moreton Budgerigar Association Live Auction, July 28th, QLD
Happening on Sunday, July 28th, the Moreton Budgerigar Association in QLD is hosting it’s 2024 Auction. The event will be held at Strathpine Community Centre, Mecklem St, Strathpine, QLD. Viewing commences at 8 AM, and the auction kicks off at 9 AM. For anyone not able to attend in person, Garry Menzies can take bids on your behalf. To that end, Phone bidder registration cuts off Saturday afternoon, July 27th. Then, Garry will arrange for someone to bid on your behalf. If you are a successful interstate bidder, your birds will be sent during the week after payment has been received. Finally, freight is to be arranged at the buyers’ expense.
