Welcome to This Week’s Budgie Bulletin!
This week, the BSSA hosted their Come & Try Budgie Expo, an event filled with warmth despite the chilly weather outside. Members and newcomers alike gathered, contributing to a lively atmosphere. The agenda featured informative presentations on breeding pairs, emphasizing which pairing combinations to avoid for optimal results. Discussions on tackling lice and mites drew keen participation, offering valuable insights into effective eradication methods, while Susan Adams delivered an engaging talk on feed and water additives. Additionally, the beloved junior and novice bird giveaway, fueled by the generosity of the more senior members of the Club, provided aspiring enthusiasts with quality breeding stock, breaking down barriers of entry into the world of exhibition budgies.

On a different note, nominations for Council for 2024/2025 concluded on June 5th. We extend our sincere gratitude to all the dedicated volunteers who stepped up and offered their support. With a diverse blend of enthusiasm and seasoned expertise among our nominees, we are poised to navigate the journey ahead with confidence, driving the State toward success in 2025 and beyond.
Looking ahead, mark your calendars for the North East’s annual tender sale on Wednesday, June 12th. This eagerly anticipated event consistently draws a crowd, and 2024 promises to uphold its reputation. It presents a fantastic opportunity to secure an outcross from a fellow Club member, test your luck in winning a prized bird, or simply relish in a social evening buzzing with excitement. For newcomers, the concept is simple yet thrilling: up to 100 birds are up for grabs, each accompanied by a tender card. Bidding typically starts at $20, allowing you to jot down your name and offer on the card. From there, the suspense builds as silent auction-style bidding ensues, with participants having the chance to counter offers until the final bell tolls around 8:30 pm. The room crackles with anticipation as attendees await the revelation of their acquisitions.
Adding to the allure this year is the Marshall Family’s disposal sale, introducing the possibility of uncovering top-tier breeding stock that might otherwise remain out of reach. Don’t miss out on this electrifying evening filled with quality budgerigars, camaraderie, and of course a quintessential meat tray raffle.
The United Bird Societies of South Australia (UBSSA) has unveiled its lineup for the annual seminar, featuring an enticing addition: a “Night On The Perch” on Saturday, August 10th. This special evening affair will unfold as a delightful dinner hosted at Sfera’s Park Suites & Convention Centre, setting the stage for a weekend brimming with avian insight and camaraderie. Following this memorable evening, Sunday offers a rich program from 8:30 am to 4 pm, boasting five esteemed guest speakers at the same venue. It’s an unparalleled opportunity for aviculture enthusiasts to glean wisdom from their peers, fostering a vibrant exchange of knowledge, while sharing their passion for the hobby. Sponsored by National Parks & Wildlife SA and Australian Birdkeeper, this event promises an enriching experience for attendees. For those unable to journey to the Newcastle Auction, this seminar serves as an ideal alternative, offering a chance to immerse oneself in the avian community’s shared expertise and enthusiasm. For further information and registration, please reach out to Brian Reichelt via email at [email protected] or call 0418 896 995. Don’t miss out on this exceptional opportunity to connect, learn, and celebrate the avian world!
Turning our attention to Chatter Magazine, we kindly ask those anticipating their hard copy in the mail to exercise patience, as magazines have only been dispatched today via Australia Post. Keep an eye out for its arrival in your mailbox sometime next week. Should your eagerly awaited copy fail to reach you by this time next week, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Council by replying to the Budgie Bulletin email. We’re committed to ensuring your satisfaction and will explore options to address any delivery concerns promptly.

Unlike the evening meetings typically held by NEBS and BSSA, this unique daytime gathering over a shared lunch offers a different experience, along with the added bonus of an aviary tour. Port Pirie is a very welcoming club, so if you’re looking for a Sunday outing and a quick day trip to the Yorke Peninsula around the Ardrossan area, this event is perfect for you. Port Pirie loves to welcome all along to their very social gatherings.
In closing, a reminder that the North East Fisher Show is being held on June 22nd, with interstate Judge and ANBC commentator Stephen Mow presiding as the Major Awards Judge.
