BCSA Budgie Bulletin: Weekly Wrap & Look Ahead

Welcome to This Week’s Budgie Bulletin!

So much has happened since last Friday, it’s been an exhilarating whirlwind! Budgies have taken the media by storm with the BCSA having three interviews on Friday, eight on Saturday, one on Sunday, and another on Monday. Several other states also featured budgies on their local radio stations. Over the weekend, budgies were the stars across radio, print, and television, all in celebration of the highlight of the exhibition budgerigar calendar: the Australian National Budgerigar Council’s 48th Annual ANBC Championship Show, hosted by the BCT.

The BCT truly knocked it out of the park, setting an incredibly high bar for next year’s Cairns organizing team. The event featured the debut of “On The Perch,” the budgerigar enthusiast’s equivalent to the Front Bar, which received rave reviews. Our very own Doug and Ruth Lange were the highlights of the night, receiving life memberships to the BCSA in recognition of their decades of dedication and support. Doug also announced his retirement as a bird carer after 22 years, a fitting end to his career, which began and concluded in Tasmania.

South Australia proudly brought home three Logies – congratulations to Dennis Lomman, Jason & Wayne Weidenhofer, and The Holmes Family, who were all crowned National Champions in their respective classes. It all came down to the very last class, where South Australia narrowly missed third place by just six points in a thrilling contest with South Queensland that had many on the edge of their seats. We certainly surprised many by coming out strong in the Normal Green class with 1st, 2nd, and 4th place finishes. A very big thank you to everyone who made their birds available for the team, and to Michael Smith, Doug Lange, Troy Holmes, and George England for ensuring the birds were in top condition for judging. Congratulations also to Nigel Tonkin, who received one of the four judging appointments for the weekend – a significant honour.

Looking ahead, the BSSA is hosting a “Come and Try” night next Tuesday, June 4th. These initiatives are fantastic for breaking down barriers to entry into the exhibition side of the hobby. Many breeders generously make their birds available at no cost to juniors and novices, offering a unique opportunity to get started. The event is also a great way to gain new knowledge, with the club conducting small workshops throughout the night on topics like treating mites and lice, water additives, and more.

The following week, the North East will host their tender sale, coordinated by Dennis Lomman in 2024. Please inform Dennis of your intention to make birds available by Wednesday, June 5th, so staging arrangements can be made. The tender sale is always a well-attended event and a fantastic opportunity to find some excellent buys. This year, birds for sale will likely include some from the Marshall Family dispersal, offering a great chance to acquire top-notch local breeding stock.

On June 16th, the Port Pirie Club will hold their quarterly meeting at Polly and Peter’s in Tiddy Widdy Bay. Join us for what is always a fantastic social day with the members of the Port Pirie Club. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to connect and enjoy the camaraderie!

Two show schedules have just been released, featuring two of the combined young and adult bird shows for 2024. Mark your calendars for the North East Fisher Show on June 22 and the Port Pirie Hutchinson Show on June 30. Additional details are provided below.

Looking interstate, this Sunday, June 2, the Orana Avicultural Society in NSW is hosting their Major Show at the Dubbo Show Grounds in Dubbo, NSW. If you’re in the Dubbo area, make sure to check out this exciting event.

Secondly, the deadline to order extra rings for the 2024 year is June 24th. This is a one-time opportunity to place your order, with the rings expected to arrive in August 2024. If you think you may breed more than you anticipated, this is the time to get your supplementary ring order in.

Finally, expressions of interest for the BCSA Council Auction are due no later than June 9th, with details for the birds required by June 15th. Please contact Ian Wise on 0437591843 or via email on [email protected] for expressions of interest and submission of lots for inclusion in the auction catalogue. The event will be held on Saturday July 20th, 2024.
