Welcome to this week’s edition of the Budgie Bulletin!
We’ve had a great response to the Early Bird Prize for Budgie Fest! We’re thrilled to announce the winner of this exciting competition – congratulations to Cheryl Ogden from Queensland! Cheryl will be enjoying a ticket to the exclusive Hentley Farm Wines degustation, courtesy of our partners at Trill™ Expert. As if that weren’t enough, Cheryl will also experience the thrill of a Mustang Drive and a Holden Supercars passenger experience at The Bend Motorsport Park, followed by a delicious dinner at the Apex Bar – all generously sponsored by The Bend. Well done, Cheryl!
In budgerigar news across the state, the North East recently hosted a highly informative talk with Dr. Marijke Mellor, covering essential topics such as diet, signs of illness, droppings, polyomavirus, PBFD, Macrorhabdus (Mega Bac), and the very timely issue of avian influenza. The event was well-attended, and congratulations to Beau Schutz for winning the meat tray raffle!
The BCSA has also been privileged to participate in several radio interviews this week, with 2GB in Sydney keen to learn more about the “interstate raiders” bringing their pet budgies all the way from Sydney. The BCSA also spoke with Magic FM out on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula – their breakfast host, Sarah Kae, is also a bird lover. From the media attention it is receiving, Budgie Fest 2024 promises to be blockbuster event in 2024.

Looking ahead, next week is packed with activity. We have committee meetings for the BSSA, North East, and ANBC Working Group, and don’t forget the Port Pirie Show next weekend – a Young Bird (2024 rung) Show, with no pre-entries required, so feel free to turn up on the day in Kadina. A reminder that entries for the inaugural BCSA Tri Club Cup close next Friday, so get out there this week and chose those birds you’d like to put in front of Richard, Peter and Gary!
Interstate, it’s a busy weekend with the Clyde UBC Show & Club Championship in Dingley, Victoria, and multiple events in Queensland, including the Fraser Coast Show, Bundaberg Bird Expo, Julie Trebbin Tribute Show in Ipswich, and the ABS Carnival Show & Presentation.
At a National level, things are moving quickly with preparedness for Avian Influenza. Note that responses and mandates are on a state-by-state basis, so what applies in one state, may not apply here in South Australia. Australia is the only continent not to have had outbreaks of this virus, however it is spread by migratory birds. South Australia in particular has many breeding areas for migratory birds, so it is continually monitoring for the arrival of the H5N1 strain.
The Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has released an insightful video in their Biosecurity Matters Newsletter, detailing essential strategies for breeders to minimise the risk of Avian Flu. The specific H5 strain of the virus that has led to significant poultry deaths overseas, is not currently present in Australia. That being said, precautions need to be taken to minimise the transmission of the virus. It can be carried by wild birds such as ducks, geese, and swans, which pose a risk to backyard poultry and pet birds when they mix.
The Department recommends that if you own or work with birds, it’s crucial to monitor for health changes, as signs of avian influenza can resemble other bird diseases. Key symptoms include sudden deaths, diarrhea, reduced appetite, decreased egg production, and general illness. To protect your birds, avoid feeding or attracting wild birds, use netting to prevent contact, regularly clean housing and equipment, and isolate any new birds for at least 30 days.
While avian influenza poses a low risk to humans, practicing good hygiene is essential—wash hands after handling birds or equipment, and clean clothing and shoes after visiting bird facilities.
