BCSA Budgie Bulletin: Weekly Wrap & Look Ahead

Welcome to This Week’s Budgie Bulletin!

This week, the Port Pirie Club held their quarterly gathering, featuring an aviary visit to Peter Glassenbury and Polly Heel’s at Tiddy Widdy Beach on the Yorke Peninsula. The day was blessed with crystal clear skies, making it hard to believe it was winter.

In a heartwarming trend, it’s wonderful to see so many enthusiasts from around the state attending these events, including those who aren’t yet Pirie members. Our cross-club culture is alive and well, as we see members immersing themselves in the hobby. A brief Special General Meeting (SGM) was held before diving into the main meeting, followed by an incredible spread that left most members in a food coma. The offerings included wings, butter chicken, Polly’s famous custom goulash, and more, topped off with equally impressive desserts.

After lunch, we had the opportunity to explore the aviary and admire the all-important budgerigars, featuring exciting rare varieties such as Black Eyed Selfs, and Dark Wings. In what may be a South Australian first, Troy Holmes actually got over the line and won the raffle, only to leave without it, so his personal record of sub-par raffle outcomes continues, much to the amusement of his fellow club members.

During the meeting, Doug Lange presented the now-famous terry-toweling Bird Carer apron to custodian Troy Holmes, as he hands over the reins after 22 years of bird caring for the State Team. This new apron replaces the rather macabre one Troy had been using, which looked like a modern art piece gone horribly wrong, after allegedly being splattered with nest box stain.

This weekend, ANBC judge Stephen Mow will be traveling to Adelaide to preside over the North East Fisher Show. For those unfamiliar with Stephen, you might recognise his distinctive voice, often compared to the iconic Murray Walker of exhibition budgerigars, having commentated the past two National titles.

The show promises to be quite engaging, with over 170 birds entered by 19 different exhibitors. If you have some free time this Saturday, head over to Kilburn Hall to support the North East Fisher Show. More details can be found in the “Around the Clubs” section below.

Turning our attention to Auctions, this week can be best described as a tsunami of events, providing more opportunities to purchase that prized outcross than we’ve seen in quite some time. It’s shaping up to be a buyer’s market, with several major auction catalogues released and dates coinciding.

Highlights this weekend include the Metropolitan Budgerigar Club (MBC) Live Auction in WA and the South Queensland Budgerigar Breeders Association (SQBBA) Auction in Queensland, both on Saturday, followed by the Riverina Auction in Victoria on Sunday. We also have the BSSA Online Auction 16 finishing up that evening. The Eastern Auction in Victoria will take place the following weekend, and the Hills Super Auction in NSW is set for July 6th.

Additionally, online events include two auctions from Matthew Troy, as he clears out some of his young birds. Whether you’re a seasoned buyer or just looking for something new, this week’s events and catalogue releases are not to be missed.

A reminder also that entries close for the Port Pirie Hutchinson Annual Show today at 5 pm. Entries can be made with Bob Simpson, either via email [email protected] or phone 0407 189 975. Note Bob will accept late entries up until 7:00 PM, Thursday, 28th June 2024. Please be sure to get along and support the Port Pirie Club, as they do a wonderful job of supporting all the other clubs here in SA.

Also approaching is the deadline to order extra rings for 2024, which is June 24th. This is a one-time opportunity to place your order, with rings expected to arrive in August 2024. If you anticipate breeding more than expected, now is the time to submit your supplementary ring order to your club’s Ring Registrar before the cutoff date. Don’t miss this chance to ensure you have enough rings for the upcoming year.

A reminder that the Australian Animal Welfare Strategy is being developed. The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has commenced public consultation on the renewing of the Australian Animal Welfare Strategy (AAWS). The objective is providing a framework for a national approach to animal welfare in Australia. The AAWS will include nearly all animals. It will be released in chapters, each dedicated to one of 6 animal groups, with the final strategy expected in 2027. More information is available using the link below.

The closing date for survey responses and submission uploads is now 4pm (AEST) Sunday 30 June 2024.

In ANBC news, the Any Other Standard Variety (AOSV) Motion was unanimously passed at the ANBC AGM on Monday evening. This AOSV class includes Saddlebacks, Darkwings, and Rainbows. The motion’s success now initiates the process of acceptance under ANBC By-Law guidelines.

The procedure will unfold as follows: for the first two years, the class will be displayed for public awareness and identification of the varieties, termed as Promotional. Following this, the next three or more years will be termed as an Exhibition Class.

The timeline for these phases will be as follows:

  • 2025 North Queensland (Cairns)
Promotional Class – NO POINTS – 3 Birds per State or Zone if possible i.e.. Could include 1 variety of each e.g. 1 Saddleback, 1 Darkwing and 1 Rainbow or 2 of one variety and 1 other, or all birds are of the same variety. If any State or Zone has excess to greater numbers notification to the Host State or Zone would enhance the visual display for all.
  • 2026 South Queensland
Promotional Class –  NO POINTS – in line with the 2025 listing.
  • 2027 New South Wales
Exhibition Class – NO POINTS – Full Staging at this National – 3 Birds per State or Zone in any combination.
  • 2028 Western Australia
Exhibition Class –  AGAIN NO POINTS – Full Staging at this National – 3 Birds per State or Zone in any combination.
  • 2029 South Australia
Final Exhibition Class – AGAIN NO POINTS with full staging as in 2027-8.

Following the 2028 class in WA, the ANBC will assess the distribution progress of these varieties across Australia. If a sufficient number of birds are available and it is determined that a full class for points is viable, states and zones will be notified that the class will transition to a full points class at the 2030 National competition. If not deemed viable, a further two-year extension may be recommended.

This is a great outcome for the development of these varieties and combinations. The very first Aim & Objective of the BCSA is to promote, encourage and stimulate the breeding and exhibiting of budgerigars, including the improvement of existing varieties, and the development of new. This strategic decision by the ANBC should see a groundswell of interest in Darkwings, Saddlebacks and Rainbows, which can only serve to improve the variety.

Looking overseas, The Budgerigar Society (England) General Council has announced that in 2025, its centenary year, the main 100-year celebration will be a combined Club Show and AGM from Friday, June 6th to Sunday, June 8th, at The Grand Hotel, North Promenade. This three-day event promises a memorable experience, ideal for a family weekend getaway at the coastal resort. The show will allow entries of both 2024 and 2025 rung birds due to the early timing in the budgerigar show season and the absence of a Club Show in 2024.

The event kicks off on Friday with the World Budgerigar Organisation’s annual meeting. The event will feature lectures and the centenary celebration dinner on Saturday night. The AGM will be held on Sunday to maximize member attendance.

Additionally, the weekend will feature a Grand Auction offering top-class budgerigars and other great items. Further details, including accommodation booking, will be provided soon.
