BCSA Budgie Bulletin: Weekly Wrap & Look Ahead

Welcome to This Week’s Budgie Bulletin!

This week, the North East Budgerigar Society (NEBS) held their annual Any Age Fisher Show in Kilburn. The event was a great success, with 173 birds entered by 19 exhibitors, and just over 150 benched on the day. Stephen Mow, ANBC judge and the voice behind the National commentary team, took on judging duties, and did an outstanding job. Best in Show was awarded to Ken & Janet Harris, while Best Opp Sex went to Bob Simpson. Jane Kelb took home Best Intermediate exhibitor, while Danny Brill won Best Novice. Tom Simsey also earned enough meat tray raffle wins (now 3) to be promoted to the “you can leave the hall while we do the raffle” status.

This weekend, we have the Hutchinson Annual Show in Crystalbrook, hosted by the Port Pirie Budgerigar Society (PPBS). More details can be found in the “Around the Clubs” section below. Note Bob will accept late entries up until 7:00 PM tonight. Please be sure to get along and support the Port Pirie Club, as they do a wonderful job of supporting all the other clubs here in SA.

Turning our attention to Auctions, we are still well and truly in the thick of auction season. This weekend, we have the Eastern Districts Auction in Melbourne, as well as 3 x 32Auction events coming online from the BSSA, Mark Williams, and Hunter Valley Budgerigar Society. The live auction catalogue for Moreton Bay in Queensland has also been released, as well as the BCSA Catalogue for our Showcase event in mid-July.

A reminder that the Australian Animal Welfare Strategy is being developed. The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has commenced public consultation on the renewing of the Australian Animal Welfare Strategy (AAWS). The objective is providing a framework for a national approach to animal welfare in Australia. The AAWS will include nearly all animals. It will be released in chapters, each dedicated to one of 6 animal groups, with the final strategy expected in 2027. More information is available using the link below.

The closing date for survey responses and submission uploads is now 4pm (AEST) Sunday 30 June 2024.

As detailed previously, as valued stakeholders (budgerigar keepers), you are invited to share your views and insights on the challenges and opportunities for animal welfare in Australia through a series of survey questions on the departments Have Your Say platform using the link below. Closes 4pm (AEST) Sunday 30 June 2024.

Turning our attention nationally, the ANBC had a productive discussion with Mars Birdcare (Golden Cob/Trill) about the future sponsorship of the National Titles. The parties reached a preliminary agreement that will support the ANBC’s ambitions for live streaming into the future. The ANBC is scheduled to present again in approximately eight weeks. As part of this initiative, the ANBC will expedite its rebranding and visual identity efforts, which will also include updates to its website.

As part of this initiative, the ANBC has presented 10 new logo concepts to each of the States and Zones. These concepts include a colour palette, logo variants, typography, and imagery. These elements will be integrated into various applications, such as letterheads and the ANBC website colour scheme, to create a cohesive and appealing visual identity for the target audience.

It’s important to remember that a brand is not just a logo; it’s a comprehensive visual identity and personality, expressed through imagery, colour, and typography. Remarkably, it has been almost 20 years since the BCSA logo was introduced, yet it remains relevant and easily recognisable today. Once it is locked down, the ANBC is hoping for a similar success, with the implementation of its new branding strategy.

The 10 options are featured below.

For example, consider Concepts 1 and 1A which demonstrate how subtle differences in a logo can lead to significant variations in website color palettes. This concept includes several variants of the same logo and illustrates its application across various mediums, such as letterheads, websites, and polo shirts. It should be noted that Concept 1A is not yet an endorsed and released option from the ANBC, but we are hopeful this can be refined if Concept 1 is accepted.

Both concepts go on below to highlight how a cohesive visual identity can be effectively implemented in multiple contexts.

Concept 1 below

Concept 1A – a slight change to the ANBC Concept 1

You can then make a subtle change to the yellow and teal, and change them to the Pantone colour references for Lutino, Light Green and Dark Green from the WBO, and the subtle changes in colour translate to this into Concept 1A. These go on to impact the website schematic colour themes, and polos, which give a different appeal.

You can see here that the budgerigars have been incorporated onto the sleeve of the polo, to give more visual impact to the Australian National Budgerigar Council wording on the chest, while maintaining the overall brand integrity.

States and Zones are being asked to put their preference back to the ANBC on their 1, 2 and 3 selection for logos for Concepts 1 through 10. Concept 10 is the existing ANBC logo, while Concept 9 is the logo used on the ANBC Logies. These last two concepts have been provided by the ANBC, so that if there is no strong desire to move away from the existing branding, these concepts can be ratified as well.

States and Zones are currently evaluating the logos, with an aim to close the loop with the ANBC on preferences in July. The BCSA encourages its members to reach out to their respective Club delegates, to let them know their preference for the new ANBC branding.
