Welcome to This Week’s Budgie Bulletin!
The Lower Murray Bird Club expo was a tremendous success. Blessed with perfect autumn weather, the event drew hundreds of visitors. The Budgerigar Council of South Australia (BCSA) had the opportunity to engage with the community at our stand, welcoming several new budgerigar enthusiasts to our growing ranks. Below, we’ve shared some delightful snapshots from the expo.

In other news, the ANBC held their meeting earlier this week, in readiness for the upcoming AGM. Lots of great discussions occurred around the ANBC’s available mechanisms for engaging members more effectively, delivering targeted messaging, and achieving measurable outcomes. A discussion was also had around South Australia’s motion for the addition of an AOSV demonstration class, to promote some of the varieties that classes may not otherwise be available for at the Nationals. This will be voted upon by all of the states and zones in June at the AGM.
Meanwhile, Geelong delivered an outstanding auction, with some great birds being made available to fanciers across the country. From all reports, the day went exceptionally well.
This week, the 2024 Logan Shield schedule was released, in readiness for the State Titles in just over two weeks’ time. Be sure to get your entries in quick, for what promises to be a fantastic day out. You can click on the image below to be transferred through to the Show Schedule on the BCSA website. |

Mad May begins! The month of all things budgie shows, that will culminate in the National titles in Launceston. Kicking things off this weekend is the BSSA Stan Watson Breeder’s Show.
|
|
BSSA Stan Watson Breeder’s Show:
Join the BSSA for the Breeder’s show on Sunday May 5th – open to the public from 11:30 AM to 1 PM @ Goodwood Memorial Hall, 388 Goodwood Road, Westbourne Park. Interstate judge Gary Gazzard will be making the trip across from Newcastle to judge the 230+ birds that have been entered. Be there to share in the $1,500 in prize money on offer.
As part of its commitment to grow and promote the hobby, the BSSA is utilising Facebook advertisements to attract local enthusiasts interested in birds who live near the Unley and Goodwood Halls to its shows. During the Murphy Classic Show, the BSSA successfully drew numerous visitors and was encouraged by their enthusiastic responses. Several attendees inquired about purchasing birds, prompting the BSSA to plan additional staging at future shows. This will enable members to bring extra show cages with birds for sale. The guidelines for these sales birds include:
- A maximum of two birds per show cage.
- Members must ensure that show cages are clean and well-presented.
- The D Cup should be used for seed as if the birds were in the show.
- There should be a focus on coloured or pet-type budgies, with appropriate pricing.
- Members are also permitted to bring surplus exhibition stock and offer them for sale to other members and the public at a higher price.
- A normal commission of 10% is payable to the BSSA, with no entry charge per bird or cage.
- Sellers must provide a box or carton for buyers to take birds home in.
These efforts are designed to not only enhance the visibility of the BSSA’s events but also to foster a more engaging and inclusive community atmosphere at their shows. Please ensure you support these initiatives where you can.

BSSA May Meeting – Tuesday May 7th
The entertainment for the May meeting will be “5 best tricks for preparing birds” and will be presented by Doug Lange and John Mulley. Doug and John have been part of the South Australian bird carer team for the ANBC show for many, many years, and will be sharing their skills and knowledge with us all.
It is intended that members bring along a couple of birds in a show cage with the preparation equipment you would normally use at home. John and Doug will run a master class on show preparation and it will be a large workshop with everyone learning and experimenting together. Doug has promised to dawn his famous terry-toweling apron, that is a fashion icon of sorts in the carer room.
The BSSA has also announced that the bird of the night for their May meeting will be the Yellowface Blue and Australian Golden Face Blue Varieties. The monthly quiz is included in their Budgie Digest, and members are encouraged to review it in preparation for the show on Sunday, where they will have the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge. In preparation for the night show, members are advised to select their birds thoughtfully. These birds could also serve as excellent practice subjects for honing their show preparation techniques.
All are welcome, and entry is FREE.
