Chatter Magazine Autumn 2026
BCSA Chatter Magazine Autumn Edition 2026
The Autumn Edition of Chatter Magazine 2026, published by the Budgerigar Council of South Australia (BCSA), arrives as the heat of summer begins to ease. As a result, attention gradually shifts back toward the upcoming show season. Summer has traditionally been a quieter stretch in the South Australian budgerigar calendar, and this year was no exception. With temperatures sitting heavy over aviaries across the state, many fanciers wisely focused on bird welfare rather than progression. Therefore, shade, airflow, clean water and careful daily monitoring became the priority. It is the time of year where patience and sound management matter most. Steady care is often rewarded once the weather finally breaks.
Celebrating Our 2025 BCSA Exhibitors of the Year
Even in a slower period, there is plenty to celebrate. Congratulations to the 2025 BCSA Exhibitors of the Year:
- Holmes Family – Open
- Michael Smith – Intermediate
- Longbottom Family – Novice
These awards recognise more than strong show results. They reflect consistency, preparation and the behind-the-scenes work that sustains success in the exhibition budgerigar world. Well done to all winners, and to every exhibitor who supported BCSA shows throughout the season.
Fancier in Focus – Kelwyn Kakoschke
This Autumn edition features South Australia’s most awarded exhibitor, Kelwyn Kakoschke, in our Fancier in Focus. Kelwyn’s contribution to the hobby is significant, and his reflections provide both historical perspective and a timely challenge to the next generation of breeders and exhibitors. They are striving to lift standards within the South Australian fancy.
Genetics Corner – Understanding Dark Factors
In Genetics Corner, we explore Dark Factors and their influence on budgerigar colour. As a foundational genetic component, Dark Factors shape breeding outcomes across numerous varieties. These include Black Eyed Selfs, Lutinos and many others. Understanding their inheritance remains essential for exhibitors who are aiming to refine colour depth and exhibition quality.
Overseas Corner – A Visit to Kuwait
Our Overseas feature includes a fascinating contribution from Marcel Bühler on Ali Bouresli and his visit to Kuwait. The article highlights the global connections within the budgerigar world. It also reminds us that learning extends well beyond our own shores.
Pet Corner – First Aid for Pet Budgies
Practical welfare takes centre stage in Pet Corner, with an essential guide to First Aid for Pet Budgies. Whether caring for a single companion bird or managing a full stud, understanding basic first aid principles is critical for every responsible owner.
Novice Corner & Exhibiting
In Novice Corner, Peter Glassenbury writes candidly about the challenges of breeding Black Eyed Self budgerigars. This is an honest and educational piece for developing exhibitors.
Meanwhile, in Exhibiting, Nigel Tonkin presents an insightful article on Balance in Budgerigars, a topic fundamental to true quality on the show bench. Balance underpins type, proportion and overall impact. These are the qualities that separate good birds from great ones.
Around the Clubs – Community Momentum Builds
As meetings resumed in February, clubs across South Australia re-gathered with renewed focus. Port Pirie and the BSSA held their AGMs, with the BSSA also enjoying a presentation from ANBC Hall of Famer Kelwyn Kakoschke on Spangles. Afterward, the North East club looked ahead to the May show season and discussed preparation strategies. Members then enjoyed an aviary visit to the Schutz & Tonkin stud, where Beau and Kate hosted a generous and welcoming afternoon.
The BCSA Chatter Magazine Autumn Edition 2026 captures a period of steady management, well-earned recognition and quiet preparation. This is before the momentum of the show season builds once more.
We trust you enjoy this edition of Chatter, and that the cooler weeks ahead bring healthy birds, renewed energy and strong preparation for the months to come.
