BCSA Budgie Bulletin: Weekly Wrap & Look Ahead

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Budgie Bulletin!

For the first time since the Budgie Bulletin began publication, there has been an entire week without any meetings, shows, or events in South Australia! This is likely due to the anticipation surrounding the upcoming Annual BCSA Auction this weekend, a major event that attracts both local and interstate fanciers. As the only live auction held annually by the Council, it brings together some of the country’s top enthusiasts.

This year’s auction features 200 birds, offering South Australian breeders a fantastic opportunity to acquire award-winning bloodlines. The selection includes birds from several ANBC Hall of Fame breeders, ensuring high-quality options. Additionally, the event will showcase several rare and sought-after varieties, such as Dark Eyed Clears, Black-eyed Selfs, and Crests, adding an extra layer of excitement to the auction.

The day coincides with our annual AGM, where we are looking for a new public officer. Some more details are provided about this role, and what it entails, in the “Around the Clubs” section below.

Congratulations also go to Danny Brill, who with the recent Ron Norman Show achieved his required 20 points within the designated 3 years with at least 3 different owner bred birds, promoting him to Intermediate. Congratulations and well done!

Looking interstate, reports indicate that the Wynnum show in Queensland last weekend was a great success. This coming weekend, the excitement continues with a show on the Sunshine Coast. For those looking to escape the depths of winter, this is the perfect opportunity to combine sun with budgies and escape to sunny Queensland!

Additionally, the Bendigo auction proved to be a fantastic fundraiser for their club, drawing numerous buyers and sellers from across the country. This event not only boosted the club’s funds but also brought together a vibrant community of budgie enthusiasts.

Budgie Auctions & Sales

This week, we have the all-important BCSA Auction on July 20th, as well as a BCSA online Pet Auction, Eric Whitton Auction, and a Wayne & Andrew Cusack, all on the 32 Auction platform. Unfortunately, the Pet Auction, and the Eric Whitton auctions have ended at the time of publication.

Looking ahead, next weekend we have Melton on July 27th, and Moreton on July 28th. We also expect the Newcastle and Western Auction catalogues shortly.

Club Calendar

All events for July are complete, with the exception of the BCSA AGM, being held on July 20th 2024, as part of the BCSA Auction. The BCSA is looking for someone to nominate as a Public Officer for Council. Nigel Tonkin, the current Public Officer, has indicated his desire to step down from this role. Under the Incorporations Act 1985, a new Public Officer is required.

The Associations Incorporation Act 1985 mandates that an incorporated association must have a Public Officer. This individual must be a natural person, at least 18 years old, and a resident of South Australia. While it is not necessary for the Public Officer to be a member of the BCSA, they can be, and may even hold other responsibilities, such as being a member of the committee of management.

Failing to appoint a Public Officer is a breach of the Act, and it is the association’s responsibility to remain compliant. Non-compliance can result in penalties, and there have been instances where associations have been declared defunct and removed from the register due to the inability to contact their Public Officer. Often, this is due to outdated information regarding their Public Officer.

The Act stipulates that any process, notice, or other document can be served on an incorporated association by serving it on its Public Officer. Most forms and returns lodged under the Act must be signed by the Public Officer. These provisions highlight the importance of the Public Officer’s role as the central contact person for the general public and Consumer and Business Services (CBS).

So, it’s critical we have someone put their hand up for this role. If you’re up for the task, let the BCSA know! We’d love you to join us.

BSSA: August Meeting – Tuesday, 6 August 2024 @ 7pm – New Start Time, Incorporating “Budgie Banter”

The August meeting of the Budgerigar Society of South Australia (BSSA) will feature a new start time of 7pm. Doors will open at this time to provide members and visitors with additional time to socialize and discuss all things related to budgies before the general meeting commences at 7:30pm. Supper and a chat over coffee will take place before the meeting, rather than after, though some refreshments will still be available following the meeting at 9pm. This pre-meeting social time is being introduced as “Budgie Banter.”

This meeting itself will feature a unique presentation on “Breeding Program Continuous Improvement – What Are the 1%ers That You Can Integrate into Your Breeding Season to Improve Your Results.” Six senior breeders will rotate among the tables, sharing their expertise on the breeding season and addressing any general questions. Each senior member will spend 10 minutes at each table, offering a valuable opportunity to learn from their experience.

The club will also provide pizzas as part of the Budgie Banter, so members are encouraged to arrive promptly at 7pm. Additionally, the “Bird of the Night” for this meeting will be the Spangle, Spangle AOSV, and Spangle Double Factor.

Port Pirie Budgerigar Society – Tour of Carawah Aviaries

The Port Pirie Budgerigar Society of South Australia Inc. has organized a unique opportunity for bird enthusiasts in South Australia. Members are invited to visit the extensive aviaries of Brian and Beverley Reichelt on the 15th of September from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm at 74 Dartmouth Street, Port Augusta.

Following the aviary tour, there is an option to arrange a luncheon at the Arid Gardens, subject to the number of participants. Brian and Beverley’s operation features 78 covered aviaries housing approximately 240 birds, including Macaws, Amazon Parrots, Asiatic Parrots, Conures, African Parrots, and Budgerigars. This is a rare chance to see the latest colour mutations in parrots that are seldom viewed by the public. Recognizing that the travel distance may be a concern, we highly recommend carpooling to enhance the travel experience with conversation and camaraderie.

This special event is not limited to Port Pirie Club members but is also open to members of Adelaide clubs. Please notify Peter Glassenbury by the 30th of August if you wish to attend the aviary visit and the luncheon. Contact him at 0409 288 710 or [email protected] to confirm your participation and secure bookings for both the tour and the luncheon. This is an opportunity not to be missed!

North East Meeting, August 14th 2024

This event will feature the North East AGM plus interview with a Veteran breeder – this year will be Graeme Alchin nominated as the veteran.
