Welcome to this week’s edition of the Budgie Bulletin! |
|
This week, the North East Budgerigar Society (NEBS) held their much-anticipated June meeting, which featured the club’s annual Tender Sale. This popular event offers members the chance to buy, swap, or sell birds in a relaxed and friendly setting, and 2025’s edition certainly lived up to expectations.
Each year, the Tender Sale provides a fantastic opportunity for members to rehome quality budgerigars or add exciting new bloodlines to their aviaries. This year, around 50 birds were made available, covering a range of varieties and bloodlines, and they were eagerly snapped up by members and guests in attendance.
The top price of the night was secured by a stunning Normal Violet hen, bred by none other than John Mulley. Her eye-catching feather and strong confirmation drew considerable attention, and she was ultimately sold to a very happy new owner. Almost everyone left with at least one new bird, and more importantly, a big smile after an enjoyable evening of catching up and friendly competition.
Adding to the buzz of the night, the meeting also served as pickup night for birds purchased during the NEBS Mega Auction, which had recently concluded. With dozens of quality birds changing hands, the pickup process ran smoothly thanks to the hard work of the club’s volunteers.
Of course, no NEBS meeting would be complete without the all-important meat tray raffle, and this month’s lucky winner was Kelly Scholefield—congratulations, Kelly!
The NEBS committee thanks everyone who attended, brought birds along, or helped make the evening a success. Events like these continue to strengthen the club spirit and support the growth of the budgerigar hobby in the North East. Stay tuned for the July meeting—more details coming soon! |

This week also saw the release of the Ron Norman 76th Annual BSSA Show Schedule. This show will be held on Sunday, 6 July 2025 at the Ascot Park Scout Hall. This event is the perfect final opportunity to showcase your birds before the breeding season begins. Whether you’re a seasoned exhibitor or showing for the first time, we encourage you to enter and be part of this celebrated tradition. Please submit your entries to George England as soon as possible. |

This weekend, members and guests of the Port Pirie Budgerigar Society (PPBS) will travel for a very special event – their quarterly aviary tour and meeting, set for Sunday, 15 June 2025, at 10:30 a.m. The June gathering will take place at the stunning Moonta Bay residence of Malcolm and Jill Loveridge, located along picturesque Marina Parade. This unique event combines the best of social connection, learning, and of course, a shared love for budgerigars.
Members will enjoy a tour of the Loveridge aviary, home to a carefully managed stud of high-quality birds. Malcolm and Jill’s years of experience and dedication to breeding and care will be on full display, offering a rare opportunity to observe firsthand the practices behind their successful program. From aviary design to feeding routines, there’s plenty to take in – and even more to learn.
Whether you’re a seasoned breeder or just starting out, this is an ideal chance to ask questions, swap tips, and network with fellow enthusiasts in a relaxed and welcoming environment. It’s also a great way to see different management styles and pick up ideas to enhance your own setups. |
|
Finally, please remember to save the date, as this year, the BCSA is planning a special social event on Saturday night, August 2nd, to coincide with our Annual Live Auction the following day. The social side of the hobby is what truly sets our community apart. With strong interest already coming from interstate, we’re expecting a larger contingent of visiting breeders—and we want to make them to feel welcome.
Successful interstate events like Budgies in the Bool, Newcastle, and Riverina have shown how impactful a great pre-auction gathering can be. We’re looking to bring that same energy to South Australia this year, creating an evening where members can connect, catch up, and celebrate the hobby. Mark your calendars – Saturday 2nd August, and let’s make it a weekend to remember! |

Latest Update on Bird Flu (H7N8)
The most recent information on Bird Flu (H7N8) is outlined below, updated on May 26th. The key takeaway for bird owners is the importance of maintaining strict biosecurity measures. The good news is that it looks like the controlled area has reduced, which means that they’re getting on top of things. Vigilance is still required:
✅ Keep sheds, yards, aviaries, and equipment clean ✅ Ensure footwear is clean before entering bird areas ✅ Wash hands thoroughly before and after handling birds or eggs
Staying vigilant with hygiene practices is essential in protecting your birds and preventing the spread of disease. Note that poultry and bird sales, shows, markets and auctions or other gatherings within the control and restricted areas are prohibited until further notice. |
