Welcome to this week’s edition of the Budgie Bulletin! |

This week’s BSSA meeting was a fantastic event, featuring a captivating presentation from Colin Elix, the President of the Lower Murray Bird Club. Colin delivered an insightful and educational talk on the topic of “Keeping Birds in a Small Backyard.” His presentation was not only engaging, but also packed with valuable information, leaving everyone who attended with a deeper understanding of how to care for birds in a smaller space, and how to gently introduce the idea that his wife Helen’s green room would make a fantastic eighth aviary. Despite the chilly Tuesday night in Adelaide, the BSSA had a remarkable turnout, reflecting the strong interest in the topic.
In addition to Colin’s talk, George England provided a thorough summary of the recent National Show from the perspective of bird carers. He emphasised the immense dedication and effort that our carer team invested throughout the week, highlighting the behind-the-scenes work that makes the event such a success, and encouraged everyone in the state to make their birds available for the highest level of competition in the country.
As the guest judge for the evening, Troy Holmes took the microphone to walk the group through a class of birds. He shared insights into what a judge looks for when evaluating birds, explaining the process of comparing features and identifying faults. This gave members a glimpse into the judging process and how meticulous attention to detail is required.
To wrap up the evening, the raffle was held, with the prizes going to Pauline Lampre, Wayne Weidenhofer, and Colin Elix. The night was a success, filled with valuable knowledge, community spirit, and, of course, a bit of fun! |

Next week, the highly anticipated North East Budgerigar Society (NEBS) Tender Sale will take place, a must-attend event for budgie enthusiasts. This popular event acts as a vibrant buy-swap-sell marketplace where bird lovers can buy, sell, or trade all things related to budgerigars. The sale attracts a large crowd, creating a buzzing atmosphere for both sellers and buyers alike. Sellers are required to bring their birds along with completed tender forms that detail essential information for each bird, including the reserve price, ring number, year, variety, and sex. This ensures that all parties are well-informed when placing bids.
Throughout the evening, buyers will have the opportunity to write their bids on tender cards, with a minimum bid increment of $10. This format makes the event exciting, as the bids rise and fall throughout the evening. At the close of the bidding, Time is Called, and the highest written bid wins the bird! After the sale, buyers are required to pay the seller directly, with the signed tender form acting as a formal receipt for the transaction. This ensures transparency and a smooth process for both buyers and sellers.
The NEBS Tender Sale is a fantastic chance to discover new birds, exchange knowledge with other enthusiasts, and make some great additions to your collection. Whether you are looking to expand your breeding stock or find a special budgie for a new home, this event is not to be missed. Mark your calendars, bring your bids, and join us for this exciting evening! We can’t wait to see you there! |

Speaking of the Auction, save the date, as this year, the BCSA is planning a special social event on Saturday night, August 2nd, to coincide with our Annual Live Auction the following day. The social side of the hobby is what truly sets our community apart. With strong interest already coming from interstate, we’re expecting a larger contingent of visiting breeders—and we want to make them to feel welcome.
Successful interstate events like Budgies in the Bool, Newcastle, and Riverina have shown how impactful a great pre-auction gathering can be. We’re looking to bring that same energy to South Australia this year, creating an evening where members can connect, catch up, and celebrate the hobby. Mark your calendars – Saturday 2nd August, and let’s make it a weekend to remember! |

Latest Update on Bird Flu (H7N8)
The most recent information on Bird Flu (H7N8) is outlined below, updated on May 26th. The key takeaway for bird owners is the importance of maintaining strict biosecurity measures. The good news is that it looks like the controlled area has reduced, which means that they’re getting on top of things. Vigilance is still required:
✅ Keep sheds, yards, aviaries, and equipment clean ✅ Ensure footwear is clean before entering bird areas ✅ Wash hands thoroughly before and after handling birds or eggs
Staying vigilant with hygiene practices is essential in protecting your birds and preventing the spread of disease. Note that poultry and bird sales, shows, markets and auctions or other gatherings within the control and restricted areas are prohibited until further notice. |
