Join a Budgie Club in South Australia

If you are interested in budgerigars and would like to meet other breeders, exhibitors and bird enthusiasts, joining a local budgie club is one of the best places to start.

The Budgerigar Council of South Australia (BCSA) is currently made up of three affiliated clubs located across metropolitan and regional South Australia. These are the North East Budgerigar Society (NEBS), based at Hectorville; the Budgerigar Society of South Australia (BSSA), based at Unley; and the Port Pirie Budgerigar Society (PPBS), representing members throughout regional South Australia.

Each club has its own personality, meetings and activities, but all share a common interest in promoting the breeding, exhibition, enjoyment and appreciation of the budgerigar.

Whether you are an experienced breeder, have recently purchased your first budgie, want to learn more about showing birds, or simply enjoy meeting people with the same interest, there is a club ready to welcome you.

BCSA Affiliated Clubs

South Australia has a proud history of local budgerigar clubs. In 1996, as many as 12 clubs were affiliated with the BCSA, including Central Plains, Mount Gambier and several others. While the number of clubs has reduced over time, South Australia continues to have an active and passionate budgerigar community.

To become an affiliated club of the BCSA, certain membership requirements must be met.

A metropolitan club located within a 50 km radius of the Adelaide G.P.O. must have at least ten (10) individual financial members. A country club, defined as being located more than 50 km from the Adelaide G.P.O., requires a minimum of five (5) individual financial members.

Budgerigar enthusiasts are welcome to belong to more than one club. However, for BCSA affiliation purposes, each individual member nominates one club as their principal BCSA affiliated club.

The North East Budgerigar Society (NEBS)

Formed in 1974, the North East Budgerigar Society is based at the Hectorville Community Centre in Adelaide’s north-eastern suburbs.

NEBS aims to encourage friendship, good fellowship and sportsmanship between its members and everyone with an interest in budgerigars. Club meetings provide an opportunity to catch up with fellow enthusiasts, learn more about breeding and exhibiting budgerigars, discuss birds and enjoy the social side of the hobby.

The club generally meets on the second Wednesday of each month.

The Budgerigar Society of South Australia (BSSA)

The Budgerigar Society of South Australia is based at Unley in Adelaide’s inner southern suburbs and has been part of the South Australian budgerigar community since 20 May 1948.

As the first budgerigar society established in South Australia, the BSSA has a long and proud history within the hobby and was also a founding member of the Australian National Budgerigar Council.

The BSSA enjoyed outstanding success at the Australian National Budgerigar Championships, winning the national competition in 1977, 1981, 1982, 1984 and 1986.

Today, the club continues to bring budgerigar enthusiasts together for meetings, education, competition and friendship.

The BSSA generally meets on the first Tuesday of each month at its home in Unley.

Whether you are new to budgerigars or have been breeding and exhibiting birds for many years, the BSSA provides an opportunity to meet other South Australian budgerigar enthusiasts and become involved in the hobby.

The Port Pirie Budgerigar Society (PPBS)

Formed in 1956, the Port Pirie Budgerigar Society provides an important connection for budgerigar breeders and enthusiasts throughout regional South Australia and beyond.

Its membership is spread across a large geographical area, with members from locations including Tiddy Widdy Bay, Port Pirie, Port Augusta and further afield.

Because members are spread throughout the regions, PPBS meetings are generally held quarterly at members’ homes, providing an opportunity for members to visit different aviaries, exchange knowledge and enjoy the social side of the hobby.

Which South Australian Budgie Club Should I Join?

There is no requirement to already breed or exhibit budgerigars before attending a club. New members, beginners and people simply wanting to learn more about budgies are encouraged to make contact.

If you are based in Adelaide’s north-east, the North East Budgerigar Society may be the most convenient option. Those living closer to Adelaide’s inner south may prefer the Budgerigar Society of South Australia, while regional breeders and enthusiasts can connect through the Port Pirie Budgerigar Society.

You can also belong to more than one club, giving you even more opportunities to attend meetings, shows, auctions and other budgerigar events.
