The BSSA Pet Bird Auction 7 for 2026 is now live, presenting budgerigar enthusiasts with a unique opportunity to purchase colourful, crest-bred and Frillback budgerigars carrying established Australian bloodlines.
The auction commenced on Sunday, August 2, and will close on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at 7:00 pm ACST, with extended bidding applying.
The birds are being offered by a pet breeder based in Springvale, Melbourne, who contacted the Budgerigar Society of South Australia to become involved in the BSSA online auction program. The majority of the birds available carry bloodlines developed by respected South Australian breeder Christine Sabateen. These lines have continued to be bred, selected and improved over approximately 15 years.
Established Christine Sabateen Bloodlines
Christine was a popular and highly regarded breeder for well over a decade. She specialised in several distinctive varieties, including Frillbacks, Texas Clearbodies, White Caps, Dilutes and Crested budgerigars. Her crests were particularly well known, with some regarded among the finest produced during that period.
Prospective buyers will notice that all birds in the auction are crest-bred, with many displaying visible features such as tufts, crests or Frillback feathering.
The current breeder worked with Christine’s bloodlines for approximately two and a half years before ill health led to the breeding program being handed to Jason Wildback, who has considerable knowledge and experience with these varieties.
Steven Bradley Exhibition Bloodlines Introduced
Quality exhibition bloodlines from Steven Bradley were later introduced into the breeding program. Steven is well known for his success at the Australian National Budgerigar Championships and for producing outstanding Crested budgerigars.
His lines were introduced to improve overall bird size while also producing larger crests and stronger Frillback features. The results have met the breeders’ expectations, and a selection of younger birds is now being offered for others to enjoy.
Collection and Auction Information
Successful buyers may arrange collection from either Springvale or Melton, Victoria.
The BSSA would love to see more pet bird and coloured budgerigar enthusiasts become involved with clubs throughout Australia. Club meetings regularly feature experienced guest speakers who share valuable and practical information suitable for exhibition breeders, variety breeders and pet bird hobbyists alike.
