BCSA Budgie Bulletin: Weekly Wrap & Look Ahead

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Budgie Bulletin!

The Budgerigar Council of South Australia marked a significant milestone over the weekend, celebrating its 30th Anniversary at the Max Amber Community Centre. The event brought together members from across the state for a day that blended reflection, connection, and a shared appreciation for the hobby. From the outset, there was a strong sense that this was more than just a celebration, it was a recognition of the people, moments, and milestones that have shaped the BCSA since its formation in 1996. Original minute books were there from the very beginning, along with Budgie Bulletins from the North East, Digests from the BSSA, and magazines from clubs like Central Districts and Adelaide Plains, along with some Budgie News and Budgie World Magazines from each era.

Nic Hayes and Graeme Goodings expertly guided attendees through the Council’s formative years, revisiting key moments in South Australia’s budgerigar history. Particular attention was given to the years the BCSA proudly hosted the ANBC National Championships, being 2000, 2007, 2014, and most recently 2022. Their reflections also extended to the evolving media landscape, contrasting the early days of radio and print coverage with today’s digital-first environment in 2026, highlighting how the hobby continues to adapt and grow.

The day was filled with positive feedback from members, reinforcing the success of the celebration. Susan Adams shared, “Had a lovely time celebrating the 30th Birthday of the Budgerigar Council of SA today with budgie friends from SA with lunch & drinks. Nic Hayes & Graeme Goodings shared memories from the last 30 years of radio & TV & events from the past years. Great memories were shared!”

Angela Van Den Brink described it simply as “a fantastic day,” while Ian Wise added, “Thanks to the BCSA for a great event. Here’s to the next 30 years.” Patrick O’Rourke echoed the sentiment, saying, “Happy 30th Birthday BCSA! Thank you for a great day,” and Ken Harris summed up the effort behind the scenes: “Excellent day—what a lot of work. Well done to all.”

One of the standout initiatives from the event was the creation of a time capsule, designed to be opened at the BCSA’s 50th Anniversary in 2046. Members recorded video messages capturing their passion for the hobby, their hopes for its future, and what they believe should remain unchanged about this great hobby. A consistent theme emerged, that budgerigars are far more than birds; they are the catalyst for lifelong friendships, shared purpose, and community. For some, it was a chance to reflect on what the hobby has given them, while others focused on inspiring the next generation to carry it forward.

Beyond the celebrations, it has been a productive week across the hobby. On Monday night, the BSSA committee met to continue preparations for the upcoming Stan Watson Young Bird Show on May 4, alongside discussions around budgeting for social media and promotional activity.

Midweek, the ANBC Working Group convened with a clear focus on delivering the 50th Anniversary National Show in 2026 in partnership with SQBBA. Planning discussions also looked ahead to future host states, including Canberra in 2027 and Western Australia in 2028, ensuring the continued strength and progression of the National platform.

All in all, it has been a week that perfectly captures what the hobby is about – honouring the past, celebrating the present, and building toward an exciting future.

Interstate, we had the Canberra Budgie Bonanza. Great Southern Bird Sale & Expo in Dandenong.

The Week Ahead

The momentum continues this weekend with a number of events across the country. Over in Western Australia, the Metropolitan Budgerigar Club of WA will host its ANZAC Day Special Table Show at Bassendean Community Hall on Old Perth Road. This annual event is always well supported and offers exhibitors the chance to showcase their birds in a more relaxed table show format, while still maintaining the spirit and respect associated with ANZAC Day.

Meanwhile in Victoria, attention turns to the Geelong Auction on April 26th. Auctions continue to play a vital role in the hobby, providing breeders with the opportunity to introduce new bloodlines, strengthen existing studs, and connect with fellow fanciers across the country. With strong interest expected, the Geelong event is shaping as another highlight on the calendar.
