| Welcome to this week’s edition of the Budgie Bulletin! |
|
| This week in budgerigars in South Australia, the Murphy Classic Future Champions Show was held. The event attracted 215 entries, with almost full benching, and also featured the strongest response yet to the club’s Come & Try initiative. The day was praised for its organisation, strong participation, and the introduction of the Junior section, which marked an encouraging step forward for the development of new exhibitors.
In the major awards, Jane Kelb dominated the Intermediate section, while Dave Miller did the same in Novice. Darcie Osobase-Kelb took both Junior awards, providing another positive sign for the future of exhibiting in South Australia. Across the variety awards, winners included exhibitors such as Dave Miller, Paul Wilton, Peter Brumby, Jane Kelb, Pauline and Mark Lampre, Ian Jenke, Adam Pannell, Patrick O’Rourke, Steve Wharton, Con Orfanos and others, reflecting the broad spread of quality on display. Dave Miller also secured the Show Manager’s Novice Award for most accumulated points. |

| This week, we also filmed a proof of concept for an exciting project we’re developing as part of the BCSA 30th Anniversary celebrations on April 18. A quick reminder that our official birthday falls on Sunday, April 12. However, with Gather Round taking place in Adelaide that weekend, we’ve scheduled the celebration for Saturday, April 18 at 12 noon. This ensures our Port Pirie and other regional members can comfortably travel to and from Adelaide on the same day. |
|
| The Week Ahead
Looking ahead, at 9:30 am this morning we return to the airwaves on Tribe FM in Willunga for our monthly segment. Emcee Blasé and Trevor Garard from the Generation Gap will be chatting through everything that’s been happening in the budgie world throughout March, before turning their attention to a big April ahead, including the BCSA’s 30th birthday celebrations.
On Tuesday night, the BSSA kicks off with an educational evening focused on some of the more specialised and often misunderstood varieties within the hobby. Wayne Weidenhofer and Kelwyn Kakoschke will lead an in-depth session on White Caps, Yellow Faced, and Golden Faced varieties, covering identification, breeding considerations, and common pitfalls at the Unley Community Centre. These nights continue to play an important role in building knowledge across all levels of the fancy, helping exhibitors better understand the finer points that can make a difference on the show bench.
On Wednesday, the North East Budgerigar Society (NEBS) will host a nostalgic and insightful evening as part of its “Blast From The Past” series, with a feature on Budgie Bill Davis. This session will explore the history, influence, and legacy of one of the South Australia’s most notable contributors, offering members a valuable perspective on how the fancy has evolved over time. These historical reflections not only honour past achievements but also provide context for today’s breeding and showing practices.
Further afield, in New South Wales this weekend, the Royal Easter Show takes centre stage, featuring a budgerigar competition as part of the program. These kinds of activities are a great way for members of the community to better understand the virtues of this great hobby. If you’re in NSW and keen to attend, or for further details, please contact Andre Ozoux on 0418 272 870. |

| Finally, tickets are still available for the BCSA 30th Birthday Lunch. We’re inviting the entire South Australian budgerigar community to help us celebrate this special milestone. For three decades, the BCSA has been the organisation bringing our clubs together, coordinating our state teams, supporting our shows, and representing South Australia on the national stage. Now it’s time to take a moment, look back on the journey, and celebrate the people who have helped shape our fancy.
We’re inviting everyone to join media personalities Graeme Goodings and Nic Hayes for this relaxed and enjoyable lunch as we bring together fanciers from across the state, past and present, to share stories, memories and a few laughs about the hobby we all love. BCSA members can attend free, while guest tickets are available for $25, making it easy to bring along a partner or friend to join in the celebrations. Tickets are strictly limited due to venue capacity.
Events like this don’t come around often, and 30 years is a milestone worth celebrating properly, so we encourage everyone involved in the South Australian fancy to be part of the event.
Whether you’ve been involved since the early days or you’ve only recently joined the hobby, this is a great opportunity to connect with fellow enthusiasts and celebrate the community that makes the budgerigar fancy so special.
🎟 Secure your ticket and join us in celebrating 30 years of the Budgerigar Council of South Australia. For the first 30 members to register, you will get a FREE 30 year commemorative hat, courtesy of the BCSA.
Saturday 18th of April 2026, Max Amber Community Hall – Wayikuu, George St Athelstone, between Noon and 2 PM. |
