| Welcome to this week’s edition of the Budgie Bulletin! |
|
| This week, the Budgerigar Society of South Australia (BSSA) embarked on its highly anticipated bus trip to the renowned Melton Auction—and what a spectacular journey it was. From the moment the wheels rolled out of Adelaide, there was a sense of excitement and camaraderie among the group, and the weekend did not disappoint.
Upon arrival in Victoria, the BSSA team was met with an extraordinary level of warmth and generosity. The hospitality extended by the Melton Club and its members was nothing short of exceptional. From heartfelt welcomes to carefully planned visits, the entire experience showcased the true spirit of budgerigar fellowship across state borders.
The aviary tours were an absolute highlight, giving attendees the opportunity to connect with some of the finest breeders in the country. First stop was the legendary Alan Rowe, a name synonymous with quality budgerigars. Alan’s birds were impressive as ever, and his passion for the hobby was only matched by the hospitality of his wife, Sandra, who lovingly prepared a generous homemade spread for the visiting South Australians. It was a warm and welcoming start that set the tone for the rest of the weekend.
Next up was a visit to the aviary of Hedra Kamel. Once again, the BSSA team was spoiled with another incredible feast and the chance to see some outstanding birds. The generosity didn’t stop there, with Steve Grech opening his aviary—and kitchen—by putting on yet another delicious meal. The time, effort, and kindness shown by all three breeders and their families left a lasting impression on everyone who attended.
It’s fair to say the bus was a little heavier on the way home—both from full bellies and the few extra birds some members couldn’t resist taking back across the border!
The BSSA would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the Melton Club and all the Victorian breeders who welcomed them with open arms. The advice shared, the birds shown, and the meals shared made each BSSA member feel incredibly valued and inspired. It’s weekends like these that remind us how strong and supportive the budgerigar community is when we come together.
Thank you, Victoria, for filling our cups—and cages! |

| This weekend, the national spotlight turns to Adelaide as the Budgerigar Council of South Australia (BCSA) hosts the state’s only live budgerigar auction—an event that promises excitement, quality birds, and strong interstate camaraderie. With breeders already arriving from across the country as early as Thursday, it’s clear that this year’s event is one not to be missed.
Anticipation has been building as birds from interstate vendors continue to roll into South Australia. The auction catalogue is bursting with quality, and excitement is mounting for what’s expected to be one of the most vibrant auctions on the national budgerigar calendar.
The weekend will kick off in style on Saturday night, with an informal dinner at the Tower Hotel. This gathering will offer breeders, friends, and fanciers the chance to connect, catch up, and talk birds ahead of the big day. It’s the perfect way to build excitement before the real action begins.
On Sunday morning, the day will begin with the BCSA Annual General Meeting (AGM)—a vital fixture for the local community to set the direction for the year ahead. Immediately following this, the attention will shift to the main event: the live auction at the Klemzig Community Centre. With the paddles ready to fly and bidders vying for top-quality birds, the energy in the room is sure to be electric.
For those who can’t make it in person, the BCSA has made arrangements for a Zoom livestream of the event. While the Zoom link will be view-only, remote bidders can still participate via phone through Carmel from Aussie Pet Connections. If you plan to bid remotely, please ensure you register your interest with Carmel by Friday evening. This is your opportunity to secure some of the finest live birds available in South Australia this year, connect with passionate breeders from around the country, and be part of a truly memorable weekend.
Join us this Sunday at Klemzig or tune in online using Zoom Meeting code 819 8646 8268 and passcode BCSA2025, and experience the thrill of South Australia’s premier live budgerigar auction. |

It’s a huge week in the Australian budgerigar scene, with several key auctions and catalogue releases making headlines. Firstly, the highly anticipated J & M Fielding Full Aviary Sell Out—announced just last week—is now live online. This is a rare opportunity to secure birds from a well-regarded aviary, with the entire collection being offered in a single event. Serious breeders are encouraged to act quickly, as interest is expected to be high.
At the same time, New South Wales fanciers are in for a treat, with five individual online auctions now open featuring 100 birds from top exhibitors James Matthews and Pam Hewitt. Each auction has been carefully balanced to ensure a variety of types and bloodlines across all five, giving bidders ample opportunity to add proven genetics to their stud. With James and Pam’s strong national results, these birds are not to be missed.
Also released this week are the catalogues for two of Victoria’s most exciting events—the Western Auction and the United Auction. Both catalogues offer impressive line-ups from a broad range of vendors, showcasing depth, diversity, and national-level quality.
And of course, the attention of the budgerigar community turns to Adelaide this weekend for the BCSA Live Auction, the only live budgerigar auction held in South Australia. With interstate breeders already arriving and anticipation building, this event promises to be a major highlight of the season.
Whether you’re bidding online or attending in person, it’s clear that this week offers something for every breeder—from seasoned exhibitors to newcomers looking to upgrade their aviaries.
Stay tuned, stay connected—and happy bidding!

James Matthews/Pam Hewitt Auction for 2025🦜
Closing Date: Varies
Lots Available: 100 total (20 per auction)
James & Pam have structured the event across five simultaneous auctions, with three concluding an hour apart on Sunday night and the remaining two wrapping up on Monday night. This staggered schedule allows purchases to be finalised promptly, avoiding long waits for later listings and enabling all birds to be shipped or collected at once.
Based on bidder feedback, varieties have been deliberately mixed across all five auctions. Previously, when single-variety groupings were offered, many participants missed out on birds they were interested in. This time, the broad mix ensures there’s something for everyone across the auctions.
