BCSA Budgie Bulletin: Weekly Wrap & Look Ahead

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Budgie Bulletin!

January is traditionally a quiet month for budgerigars in South Australia, with extreme heat and school holidays encouraging most fanciers to keep things low-key and focus on bird welfare rather than meetings, shows, and travel. That said, there’s plenty happening behind the scenes as clubs lock in dates, confirm venues, and start shaping what will be another busy year on the show bench.

This week, the Budgerigar Council of South Australia (BCSA) has released its 2026 Calendar of Events, bringing together key meetings, shows, tours, and major dates across the state in one easy spot. If you like to plan ahead (or you simply don’t want to miss a thing), this is the one to bookmark.

The 2026 Show Calendar has also been finalised — perfect for popping on the fridge, saving to your phone, or sharing with your bird mates so everyone is on the same page when show season ramps up.

This week has also seen the launch of a very special fundraising auction in support of Tony and Angela Van Den Brink, following the heartbreaking loss of their son Lee, who sadly passed away over the Christmas period at just 42 years of age. Lee leaves behind his wife and young son, and as you can imagine, the grief for the family is immense — made even heavier by the sudden financial burden that comes with arranging a memorial.

When Tony reached out asking whether he could sell a small selection of birds to help cover the memorial costs, the response from the budgerigar community was immediate. Breeders and buyers from across Australia have rallied around the family, donating birds, sharing the catalogue, and offering their support in any way they can. The result is the Lee Brooks Fundraising Auction, running this week — a genuine reflection of what this hobby does best when one of our own needs help.

If you’re in a position to support the auction, we encourage you to do so — whether that’s by placing a bid, donating to the donation lot, or simply sharing the link with other fanciers. Every contribution, no matter the size, will help ease the pressure on the family and provide support during a time no one should have to face.

If you can, please get behind the event.

Greg Parker from New South Wales has also been in touch with the BCSA, asking us to advise members that the Paul Bayliss Dispersal Sale will be taking place online in the coming weeks. As many across the fancy are aware, Paul passed away recently, and this sale will provide an opportunity for fanciers to secure birds from his stud while also ensuring they are placed into good homes.

The dispersal will be coordinated by Eric Whitton, who will be running a series of online auctions to progressively move the birds over multiple lots/events. Further details, including dates, catalogue information, and bidding links, will be shared as they become available.

Interstate, the ABS Auction was a standout success. Wayne Robinson has reported that it was the most successful auction the club has held to date, with a strong turnout and plenty of bidding activity right across the catalogue. It’s a terrific result for the club and a great sign of continued momentum heading into the 2026 season.

Budgies Available for Re-homing – Free to a Good Home (Goodwood, SA)

Robin Dunk is seeking a permanent home for two budgies (male and female) that were “rescued” at the last minute when friends emigrated to the UK. Robin is hoping a member of the budgerigar community may be able to offer them a long-term home.

The birds are approximately 6–7 years old, very healthy, and currently housed in a large cage. The male flies well, while the female has never flown. The birds are free to a good home, with the cage included.
