The North East Budgerigar Society’s 50th Anniversary Show was a tremendous success, celebrating five decades of dedication to the hobby with a strong turnout and outstanding birds on display. A total of 190 budgerigars were entered, with 159 benched on the day, reflecting the commitment and enthusiasm of exhibitors from across the State. It also marked the first major show in the North East’s new home in Hectorville.
Presiding over the major awards was Kelwyn Kakoschke, whose sharp eye and extensive experience were on full display. He was expertly supported by Shiralee Reardon and Ian Marshall. In a true testament to Kelwyn’s knowledge and passion, he was able to recall all the varieties, strengths, and faults, of each of the Top 10 birds—as well as the Best Novice entries—even after the staging had been dismantled and birds dispersed. |
|
The top honours of the day went to Kelly Scholefield, with the “Ladies Exhibit”, while Best Opposite Sex award was presented to the Holmes Family. Andrew Swift took home Best Novice in Show, while Judith Hawker Best Novice Opposite Sex. Competition aside, the event marked a warm celebration of the club’s history and camaraderie. Congratulations to all participants, helpers, and attendees who made the NEBS 50th Anniversary Show such a memorable occasion.

Many of you will have received, via your Club Secretary, a copy of the proposed new BCSA Constitution, circulated in preparation for our upcoming AGM in August. The current Constitution, now over 30 years old, has seen only a few minor amendments since its inception. In response to evolving governance standards, it has been thoroughly updated and modernised to align with current Consumer Affairs requirements. Most of the proposed changes are structural, including updates to the “Powers” clause. Notably, there are also revisions to the affiliate, half-affiliate, and associated membership categories—with a move to streamline these by removing the need for half-affiliate and associated memberships. These categories were originally included to accommodate mixed bird clubs affiliated with the BCSA, a structure no longer necessary in 2025. Members will have the option to vote on the proposed Constitution by postal or email ballot, with full voting instructions to be outlined in the AGM agenda to be distributed shortly.
The BCSA Auction Catalogue has officially come together for Sunday, 3 August, promising one of the most exciting events on this year’s South Australian budgerigar calendar. A total of 189 lots have been entered, showcasing an outstanding selection of birds from across the country. Of particular note, 76 birds have been submitted by 13 interstate vendors, highlighting the national reach and growing popularity of this live event. Among the notable interstate contributors are Gary Gazzard, Jeffrey Leong, Alan Rowe, Tony & Sylvia Appleton, Peter Thurn, Norm Wheatley, the Boal Family, John Ennis, Ray Slade, and Mick Gearing—each bringing a wealth of breeding experience and a reputation for quality. This year’s auction is especially distinguished by the presence of 10 Logie winners from the 2025 ANBC Nationals, as well as seven breeders who have been inducted into the ANBC Hall of Fame. Their involvement is a testament to the calibre of birds on offer and the strength of support from the wider Australian budgerigar community.
In the lead up to the Auction, on Saturday evening, 2 August, we’ll be gathering for a relaxed and social dinner at the Tower Hotel in Magill. It’s a great chance to unwind, catch up with fellow fanciers, and enjoy some good food and conversation ahead of Sunday’s big event. With several interstate visitors already booked into accommodation around Adelaide for the weekend, this dinner will bring together both local and travelling budgerigar enthusiasts. The evening is casual—meals and drinks are at your own expense—and promises to be a fantastic opportunity to connect, share stories, and talk birds in a welcoming setting. We’ve currently RSVP’d for 20 guests, but there’s plenty of room for more! So, if you’re in town, come along and be part of the fun at the Tower Hotel, located on Magill Road in Magill. To help us confirm numbers with the venue, please let George England know if you’ll be attending by sending him an email.
This week, the Animal Expo returned to Wayville Showgrounds, drawing a massive crowd of animal lovers and showcasing a vibrant mix of creatures great and small. From cuddly companions and exotic reptiles to farmyard favourites, the event offered something for every animal enthusiast. Families, breeders, and pet industry professionals packed the Wayville pavilion to explore stalls, meet the animals up close, and take part in interactive displays. With strong attendance and a lively atmosphere, the Expo proved once again to be a highlight for animal lovers.
Turning our attention to the week ahead, a final reminder – supplementary ring orders close this weekend. If you anticipate needing more rings than you initially ordered for 2025, now is the perfect time to place a supplementary order. This is your last chance to secure additional rings without incurring extra freight charges. Whether you’ve had a stronger breeding season than expected or just want to ensure you’re covered, placing your order now will save both time and money. After this weekend, any further ring requests will be treated as individual orders and will attract separate shipping fees. Don’t leave it too late—submit your supplementary ring order before the cut-off this weekend to avoid disappointment and unnecessary costs. |

Birds are to be benched between 9:00 AM and 9:45 AM, with judging commencing promptly at 10:00 AM. Exhibitors are reminded that birds are not to be removed before 3:00 PM, or until advised by the Show Manager. The Show Luncheon has seen a great response, with over 20 participants already registered, so it’s definitely going ahead. The Port Pirie committee will be providing fresh salads and roast chickens on Sunday, ensuring a hearty and enjoyable lunch for all in attendance. Even if you’re not exhibiting, your support goes a long way in keeping these regional shows strong and vibrant. The weather is expected to be similar to Adelaide, with a forecast top of 15 degrees—perfect for a winter outing and a catch-up with fellow fanciers. After an impressive 586 lots were dispersed across the country last weekend, this weekend brings a more relaxed pace in the auction scene. However, there’s still activity to keep an eye on, with the Metropolitan Budgerigar Club (MBC) Auction taking place in Perth, and the BSSA Online Auction #17 set to close on Sunday, as well as the Steve and Tim Grech Sale via Aussie Pet Connections. We’ve also seen the release of the Bendigo Auction catalogue, and the highly anticipated BCSA Auction catalogue.
