| Welcome to this week’s edition of the Budgie Bulletin! |
It’s been another busy week in budgerigars in South Australia. The BSSA kicked the week off with their Come & Try Night, which also featured a presentation on their Melton bus trip and group discussions.
A feature event of the evening was the exhibition budgerigar giveaway to Novice and Junior members. This is designed to help Novices and Juniors overcome some of the barriers to entry to exhibition budgerigars and is only possible through the generosity of our Open and Intermediate breeders who lean in, and donate exhibition quality budgerigars. Congratulations to all who made that give away possible. |
| Brice Wheaton delivered an engaging presentation on the Club’s recent trip to Melton, sharing a collection of photos that captured the aviary visits undertaken during the tour. Members enjoyed exploring the impressive setups at Alan and Sandra Rowe’s, Hedra Kamel’s, and Steve Grech’s properties. Our South Australian cohort was warmly welcomed and exceptionally well looked after throughout the visit. |
| The evening concluded with group discussions centred on breeding challenges and strategies to overcome them, encouraging members to share ideas collaboratively. Chris Murphy prepared a thoughtful series of conversation starters that sparked lively engagement among the groups. The energy in the room was high, and the discussions that followed were both insightful and productive, so much so that we had to be reminded to pull things up before we went too far over time. |
| The very next evening, the North East Budgerigar Society (NEBS) hosted their Colin Flanagan Virtual Aviary Tour, followed by a question and answer session. Colin was excellent, and extremely well prepared, delivering an insightful tour of his facility in Neerim South from Victoria via Zoom Link. Colin talked through his lines, and strategies for optimizing his 72 cabinets. He also delved into his recent trip to the Europe, and his insights into the birds that are now being bred over there, specifically on the width of head, and his take aways from that. The question and answer session also provided some great insight, with lots of great questions asked around things like the synergies of being in a partnership, how far behind our birds really are, and his thoughts on the National Show format, versus the likes of a World Show in the UK. |
The night concluded on a light-hearted note, with the meat tray raffle won by Nigel Tonkin and collected on his behalf by Beau Schutz. Nigel may have a challenge prying the meat tray away from Beau’s daughter, who was very happy with her win.
| This week also saw several other great radio interviews in the lead up to Budgie Fest – the Tribe FM interview was released, as well as a fantastic interview with Bec Seabrooke at Life FM. |
| In the week ahead, we have the ANBC delegates meeting. We will be working together with the other states to make some adjustments to the Bylaws, as well as looking at the Victorian motions for announcing the ANBC judges earlier than January 1st of each year, and the motion for the Service Section of the Hall of Fame to be recognized in the same banner format at ANBC National events as the Breeder’s Excellence Division.
Next weekend, we also have the Port Pirie Meeting, which will include an aviary tour of Doug & Ruth Lange’s, and their annual Juvenile and UBC Show. The Club is asking each member or guest to bring along five nest feathers, and five current year rung juvenile birds, to help bolster the show numbers.
During the week, keep an ear out for us, as we announce several more media engagements. |
