Welcome to This Week’s Budgie Bulletin!
It’s been a whirlwind of activity this week in South Australia! We kicked off with the BSSA Stan Watson show, featuring over 230 entries and expertly judged by Gary Gazzard from NSW. The exhibition showcased some exceptional birds, setting the stage for the upcoming State selection show in just two weeks.
On Monday night, the BCSA contributed to the ANBC live streaming sub-committee, brainstorming ways to enhance our standard of excellence for this new platform. The sub-committee is a melting pot for progressive ideas driven towards the sustainment and development of the fancy as a whole moving forward. It’s a really exciting initiative from the ANBC.
Additionally, the BSSA’s monthly meeting was a highlight, with South Australia’s renowned bird carers, Doug Lange and John Mulley, educating attendees on the intricacies of preparing birds for show. Their presentation on Tuesday evening, followed by a hands-on workshop, offered valuable insights for breeders of all levels, from Open breeders, all the way through to Novice.
The engagement continued into Wednesday night at the North East Budgerigar Society (NEBS) pairing night. This informal session delved into pairing strategies and expected outcomes, providing a lively forum for discussion. The evening was made even more enjoyable with the return of the meat tray and fruit platter. Congratulations to Ken and Pamela Cox, and John Farrugia Gay, for snagging those delightful prizes!

In other news, the Bendigo club and Gold Coast recently hosted their annual shows. Congratulations to all the winners! While publishing the Show Results is not in direct violation of the ANBC Social Media policy, as these events are not Selection Shows, we choose to err on the side of caution. Our aim is to preserve the integrity of the event; therefore, we have decided not to publish photos of the winning birds. |

Looking ahead, this weekend is packed with exciting events for budgerigar enthusiasts. On Saturday, the North East hosts the Lloyd Edwards Show, featuring over 165 entries, followed by the Harry Johnston Show hosted by Port Pirie on Sunday, with more than 175 entries. Both events are shaping up to be fantastic gatherings for everyone who cherishes this wonderful hobby.
Additionally, entries close this weekend for the Logan Shield, the state selection show and a highlight of the South Australian budgerigar calendar. This event, focusing on Young Birds, serves as the State Championships and offers a thrilling opportunity for participants. Everyone is encouraged to engage and support, as the best young birds in the state vie for a spot on the 84-bird team heading to Launceston.
Reflecting on the enormity of the State and National titles, it’s noteworthy that the ANBC issued 147,180 rings in 2023, and of these, only 588 of these birds will make the cut to compete for 28 National titles on offer at the end of May. For the statisticians among us, this translates to approximately 1 in every 250 bred birds making the cut to compete in Launceston, and only 1 in every 5000 club-rung birds securing an elusive National title — the highest possible accolade in competitive exhibition budgerigars in Australia. |
|
We are two week’s out from Adelaide’s Pet Show, which coincides with the weekend of the Logan Shield. We are providing a unique 20% discount code for entry into this year’s Adelaide event. You can use AZ4K48 when purchasing to get this discount. Feel free to share this code with your family and friends, as the more people we can get along, the greater the weekend will be, and our feathered friends will be the long-term winners.
