The Budgerigar Society of South Australia came together for its monthly committee meeting, with much of the discussion centred on preparations for the club’s upcoming monthly meeting in two weeks’ time. Committee meetings may not always attract the same attention as shows, auctions or social events, but they remain an important part of keeping our clubs organised, active and moving forward.

The Australian National Budgerigar Council also convened its latest working group meeting. A key focus was continuing to support New South Wales as preparations build for the upcoming National Championships in Canberra. Attention also turned towards Western Australia, which will host the event the following year. Planning for the WA Nationals is already progressing well, with the various elements of the event beginning to come together.

On Wednesday night, the ANBC Colours and Standards Committee met for the first time under the leadership of Peter Thurn. The meeting adopted a noticeably different and refreshing format, with members encouraged to participate in open and constructive discussions regarding The Standard and potential changes that may help modernise it.

Melanistic Spangles were another major topic of discussion. Committee members shared their personal experiences with breeding the variety, including breeding records, observations and the results achieved within their own aviaries. No formal motions were presented and no votes were taken. Instead, the meeting provided an opportunity for the Colours and Standards team to exchange knowledge, explore ideas and begin building a collaborative approach to future discussions. It was a proactive and positive first meeting under Peter’s leadership.

Preparations are also well underway for next week’s live auction on Sunday, August 2. With several interstate visitors looking forward to experiencing something a little different during their time in Adelaide, Gaucho’s Argentinian Steakhouse in Gouger Street has been selected as the venue for the pre-auction gathering on Saturday night.

Gaucho’s is an Adelaide institution, and we are confident our interstate guests will enjoy the opportunity to sample some of the city’s finest steaks. Spaces are still available for anyone wishing to attend, and members are encouraged to contact George England to secure their place.
